[Snowflake] Day 1, belated.

Jan 06, 2017 09:37

Have decided to, for the second year in a row, do the Snowflake Challenge. (Note: I will be doing the image-free linkback on all entries.)

I figure, me having been semi-silent for months and comment-neglectful, it's a kick in the rear to actually post daily for a bit and get back in the habit. Also, excellent procrastination technique!

Day 1: Self Recs

I feel like I should just link back to last year's post. It was very thorough. But I also feel like that would be cheating. So, hey! This year, let's do POV varieties! One first, one second, one third. Apologies for the lack of any gen.

Body Shots (2502 words) by Minim Calibre
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Angel: the Series
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Winifred Burkle/Faith Lehane

I have very little first-person POV stuff and the other one I can think of on AO3, I recommended last year. (Heh. The ones I do have there are femslash. Cough.) This was fun to write, I dimly recall (I wrote it in 2002 or 2003, so in the before times), got positive feedback at the time, and is a fairly rare pairing.

Screenwriter's Blues (1150 words) by Minim Calibre
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harold and Kumar go to White Castle
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Neil Patrick Harris/Harold's Car

This was my FIRST Yuletide story! It went over very well and I will never be able to dupicate its Yuletide success and I am so fucking okay with that, OMG. After that, you know, there's NO PRESSURE. "Welp, can't beat NPH and the car."

This is also the story that means I'm not allowed to choose my own ratings, having gone to my beta readers and said, "So, what do you think? I'm thinking PG-13." (We still used that system back then.) I think I'm actually erring on the side of overrating these days and could savely downrate some of the E stuff to M, but I'm going by the Bodily Fluid Mentions rule.

Look, this is a canon pairing, okay?

Also, I am pretty sure it's my only Second Person POV story. So.

There Was, There Wasn't (13521 words) by Minim Calibre
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Steve Rogers/Natasha Romanov

Borderline between M and E, FWIW. Anyhow, moving on. I had a lot of third person POV to choose from and I decided to go for something fairly recent with this one.

I had a strong desire, after CA:TWS, to Natasha and Steve hook up in a friendly, non-romantic fashion and could not find enough of it to satisfy that itch so I started with the start of the sex scene and then because what the hell is linear writing? it somehow it became an extended character study/Natasha-centered version of the movie and also became kind of long and melancholy.

Due to sporadic work on my part, it took me almost two years to complete it. Half of it, though, I wrote in the month or so I allowed myself to finish it once I set a firm deadline. Had to be done and posted before Civil War came out in the US, you see. It's the first story where I did the whole retype-the-damn-thing method (it was about 7/8s complete at that point and I thought it would force me to finish it/tie it together properly) which, sadly, means that OMG, there were so many typos per square inch when I first posted it that I hang my head in former professional proofreader shame. Lot of post-posting proof passes took place in the first hour or two, let's just say. Note to self: BE PATIENT. Proof first, post later. (In my defense, it had been proofed thoroughly BEFORE I retyped it and my brain just kind of took it as an already-proofed thing instead of treating it like it was net-new. I'm not doing that again.)

Tangents about my own proofreading shame aside, it's a really effective method that, as mentioned in my last post, I'm using again.

I re-read it the other day, well, parts of it (I was looking for something on my Kindle), and I remain happy with the story almost a year after finishing it. I'm especially satisfied with the last scene between Natasha and Nick Fury and with the scene between Natasha and Sam in the hospital.

So that's it, that's my three! Now to go see what else I need to catch up on...
