ok, if you haven't heard of susan boyle here's the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWyk ppl have been posting this like crazy on fbook and saying "OMG never judge a book by its cover" "she's such an inspiration, i never woulda guessed she had such talent"
blah blah blah.
maybe i'm making an issue out of nothing, but it really gets to me how ppl expected an "ugly" person to have no talent. if you study psychology, you know that (paradoxically, in my opinion) people, especially women, tend to trust more attractive looking people.
why?
that's up for debate. perhaps they associate unattractiveness with deviant behaviour. afterall, the culture we live in (exacerbated by pop media) likes to portray horrific behaviours into monstrous images. in my opinion, day to day grievances are instigated by self-aware "hot" people (think of the privileged and beautiful white girl/guy that projects their sense of entitlement on others whether it's pushing ahead in line, not assisting those clearly in need, shooting dirty looks for less than obvious reasons, tossing their garbage on public or private space, etc).
it just disgusts me. however i shouldn't assume this about the majority either, otherwise it makes me just a guilty of judgment. i must consider that the audience drawn to shows like britain's got talent and the vast array of other mind-numbing "entertainment" on tv doesn't represent the heterogeneity of global (or even just western) society.
i dunno. i mean, i guess we all live our lives making instantaneous decisions and assumptions of everybody we meet and often at an unconscious level but i'd like to think that i'm not as shallow as the people representing the spectators and judges of this show. i'd like to think that although i may make that initial, almost reflexive assessment that i don't hold these conditioned assumptions against the people i meet, letting it colour my interactions and possible further relationships with these people, "hot" or not.
so what do you guys think?
