Chapter 60 - One Final Scare

Pairings: Yunjae, little hints of Yoosu and Changmin / Lee Jun Ki
Warnings: mention rape and abuse, some violence, smut.
Summary:
Kim Jaejoong is forced to do business with the mafia who keep threatening him. Changmin, Junsu and Yoochun are responsible for his security. Jung Yunho is a cop investigating a paedophile/mafia man named Kim Jaejoong and the mafia is blackmailing him to do one job for them: kill Jaejoong. And so their paths collided. A week later, Jung Yunho is more than a prisoner in Kim Jaejoong's house and both mafia and cops are getting near the two men. Now Taemin is back and there's a race to find him first. However, at the end of evrything remains a question: how do you heal wounds?

Chapter 1 - Jaejoong Intro, ..., Chapter 59 - Trial And Error

Jaejoong raced home to take a shower and change clothes. His friends were nowhere to be found and Taemin was already at school. He sighed in relief. He was not yet ready to answer their nosy questions. His own mind was still trying to make sense of everything.
When he arrived at the company, Jun Ki bombarded him with all sorts of annoying little problems and the morning vanished in meetings and putting out fires.

Yunho arrived at the police station with a huge smile. He was feeling great. Better than great. Walking on clouds fantastic.
His morning involved running and biting his inner cheeks to not go ballistic. He had to run around back streets chasing some small time crook. Then a case where they had to deal with domestic violence. Luckily, Kim Soo Hyun, Jun Il Woo’s former partner was also there and his cheery smiley attitude pissed the man enough that he attacked them and they could take him into police custody. That allowed Yunho and Il Woo to take the wife and kids to a shelter and convince her to present charges.
Before lunch could even be considered, there was a lot of follow up questionings on several cases and tons of paperwork.
When lunch finally arrived, Yunho was tired and wanted to curl up somewhere. His face, however, still showed traces of a smile that didn’t want to go away. Il Woo considered asking what had happened the night before but decided against it. He figured that when Yunho and Jaejoong got back together, the news would travel faster than the speed of light.

Jaejoong was annoyed. His business lunch meeting had almost destroyed his good mood. He had dealt with mafia dogs for so long that he had forgotten how some regular business men were almost just as bad. His polite society manners were too built in his personality to punch the man in front of him but any business dealings were definitely off the table.
Outside his therapist’s office, Jaejoong breathed deeply. They were supposed to review the footage from the day Siwon was captured. He had seen it again. Once. In a trial session. However, he had been sitting in the audience and could block out the sounds and the images. This time, he would have to deal with all of it.

Top and his wife were visiting their recently opened mall with the kids. Their smiling faces showed no apprehension or stress. However, close by, their men were keeping a close watch on time. They were all on a schedule.

Jaejoong forced himself to look and hear everything. Half way through, he realised he already felt enough distance to what was on screen. It still hurt. But it felt like past. What was catching his attention were other finer details. His eyes kept going to Yunho instead. The way the tall man had pushed Siwon aside as he ran inside the room had almost made Jaejoong smile. He had totally recognized the cop’s possessive nature in that move. It was exactly as if Yunho had screamed that he was his and no one else could even get near him.
The moments when Siwon had been able to grab a gun was another eye opener. This time Jaejoong noticed why. Yunho had tried to check if he was alright and in those seconds took his eyes off Siwon. It made his heart feel small. In the middle of such a crazy fight, all Yunho could think about had been him.
And Jaejoong had to look at himself on that screen. His scared look had changed completely when he fired at Siwon to save Yunho. That was what his face showed. How worried he had been for the cop’s sake. How his eyes flew to the fallen man praying that he was still alive.
When he saw himself rejecting Yunho on the end of that video, his eyes swelled with tears. Jaejoong hide his face while he tried to calm down. The way they had looked at each other in those moments made him grateful that he had decided to step away and that Yunho had agreed. Everything had been so messed up. But now, he had a chance. A chance to get things right, to fight for what he wanted.
-Mr. Kim, are you ok?
-Yes.
-Today might be the final session before they issue a sentence. They’ll go over your testimony while showing this video.
-I’m glad you practically forced me to see it here first. I can do it. I feared how powerless Siwon made me feel. But… I fought him. And I won. I’ve been testifying without a hint of panic attacks. Even looking at his face. I’m… honestly, just anxious to reach the finishing line.
The way the therapist smiled at him with an approving nod made Jaejoong feel at peace. It was great that the man believed him. What was much better was how he believed in himself.

Everyone gathered outside the court house. Smaller groups joined slowly to form a larger one. In the middle of all that, Jaejoong and Yunho were busy talking with different people wishing them luck and could only steal some glances at each other from a distance.
Everyone just let them get the society talk with all the well-wishers out of the way. No one dared to question Jaejoong or Yunho about their night together, afraid to jinx it. Not even Yoochun, no matter how curious he was. They knew that Jaejoong must have taken Yunho home and he never returned to the mansion, so that meant that they spent the night all alone. None of the men had any visible marks or funny walks, so both the cops and the bodyguards were a bit disappointed when they saw them. However, they had smiles that wouldn’t go away, no matter how boring the work subject being discussed. Things were looking up.

The second Jaejoong got rid of the last polite conversation that he had no patience for, his eyes searched for Yunho. The cop was almost getting rid of someone as well. He could feel a lot of curious eyes on him. Jaejoong ignored them all. There was only one thing he cared about right now. His legs took him next to Yunho with determination, his eyes never wavering from his prey.
Yunho turned to find himself face to face with a serious looking Jaejoong. That took him by surprise. He had been expecting a smile, not that serious face. His hopes crashed and burned.
-Yunho, do you want to go on a date?

Heechul, Jung Min, Junsu and Mr. Jung were shamelessly watching them and trying to hear what was being said.
Slightly behind them, Yoochun, Changmin and Jun Ki were shaking their head at the four meddling men.

Yunho just looked at Jaejoong, completely taken by surprise. His head was not really registering the question. He kept thinking that he was the one who was going to ask that. He had spent the last weeks closely watching Jaejoong to try and find if the answer would be positive. And he had just realised the night before and that morning that the answer would be the one he wanted. But now Jaejoong had turned the tables on him. The beautiful man had asked first.
Jaejoong stared anxiously at Yunho, his heart rate going up with each passing second. The cop was just looking at him like he had asked something ridiculous or out of context. The business man was suddenly trying to figure out if he had read the signs wrong. But how could that be? He had been so sure.
Yunho finally noticed that Jaejoong was starting to look a little scared and unsure. He almost wanted to kick himself. It didn’t really matter who had asked who. This way might even be better for his nerves. Now he knew for sure that Jaejoong really liked him.
-Yes, I want to. I really really want to.
The soft words were spoken in that husky tone that Jaejoong loved so much. It gave him butterflies.
Yunho felt as if the sky had opened up to show him only Jaejoong when the business man smiled up at him.

-Told you. - Beamed Heechul.
-Ah, Yunho! Come on. Why is he being such a girl? - Complained Jung Min.
Junsu and Mr. Jung were too busy smiling at each other to join the banter.
A little behind, Changmin was smirking at Yoochun with a very pleased face.
-How about that? I was sure it would be Yunho. - Said Yoochun.
-Jae was the one who ended things. Pretty much he’d have to be the one to start them again. - Reasoned Jun Ki.

Jaejoong and Yunho fell into a comfortable silence, just happy to smile at each other. Yoochun tried to go and tease them but was dragged back by Junsu and Jun Ki, much to Changmin’s amusement.

The happy atmosphere changed when everyone entered the court. Jaejoong testified with a controlled voice, his eyes finding strength in Yunho who had already testified and was now in the audience. The defence lawyer tried to make Jaejoong lose his temper, a strategy he had already tried before with Yunho. The business man simply kept answering in short sentences. .
When it was the accusation’s lawyer time, he made sure to allow Jaejoong to speak freely.
By the time the business man was done and had managed to join his friends in the audience room, the lawyers were preparing to do their final statements.
Yunho grabbed Jaejoong’s hand and gave it a squeeze.
-You were great out there.
-Thanks.
-With the way Taemin and you two testified, plus all the evidence Ri Ho had on him, he’s toast. - Said Junsu.
After the two lawyers were done, the judge set a date for the final hearing when the sentence would be issued.

Outside in the stairs, there was a lot of people waiting, mostly reporters. Jaejoong found himself surrounded by his bodyguards immediately. To their surprise, even Siwon was coming down the stairs instead of being quietly escorted out of the building. Apparently, the man wanted to talk with the reporters more than anything. There were people shouting angry insults at Siwon but he simply smiled at the cameras.
Junsu was closest to where Siwon was. As he helped to clear a path for Jaejoong down the stairs, the crowd pushed.
Siwon smiled coldly to notice how the anxious crowd kept pushing Jaejoong his way. His deal was about to come through, the evidence on Top that he had been waiting for about to finally be delivered. It wouldn’t get him freedom but maybe it would be enough that he could take care of the rest himself. For sure he knew that he wanted to find a way to get his hands on Jaejoong. He wanted that so much that he might just forget everything if he could get the pretty man now.
When Junsu was just one step higher than Siwon, he was the closest yet to the ex-lawyer. Suddenly, a flash of light hit his eyes.
“What was that? It looked like a sniper rifle.”
Junsu looked around. He spotted easily the best place from where to fire. He had no idea who the target might be. He signalled his friends and they all immediately closed around Jaejoong.
Someone screamed. Soon there was screams from all over the crowd.

Jaejoong found himself almost on the floor, two heavy bodies keeping him down. Next to him, Jun Ki was also in a similar position. The assistant looked angry. His mind raced to make sense of things. Apparently two shots had been fired. There was screams all around and the cops were shouting orders.
The danger apparently wasn’t aimed at him. Suddenly Jaejoong knew who had been shot. When his eyes met Jun Ki he saw the assistant had the same thought. Still the assistant went back to being annoyed at Changmin who had made sure to block him out as well. Changmin, who probably knew how Jun Ki was feeling right now, kept his back to them, while he watched the crowd. Jaejoong almost laughed. He thought that the bickering between them was part of their charm.
Then as he looked to his other side, Jaejoong finally noticed who the other person who had protected him was. Yunho was in front of him, his full height keeping everyone at a distance. Unlike Jun Ki, he didn’t felt one tiny bit annoyed, in fact, he was thrilled. His only problem was resisting the urge to suddenly hug Yunho with all his strength.
Yoochun, Junsu, Eric and Donghae were also standing by, making sure that the sniper couldn’t get a clear angle on Jaejoong. Just in case.
On the steps where Siwon had stood, there was now blood. A little further down, paramedics were already attending the ex-lawyer.
Junsu checked the building from where he had seen the flash of light. Some of the cops seemed to have identified it as well.
Captain Rain came down the steps talking on his radio. He took one look at Yunho and the cop hurried to join the others but not before he touched Jaejoong’s hand and smiled in reassurance. Jaejoong watched how Yunho joined the other cops who were racing towards where the shots had come from. He sighed. He was starting to realise what dating a cop might mean. He felt Junsu put a hand on his shoulder.
-Don’t worry. He’ll be fine. Besides, considering the shot, whoever did this is a pro and long gone by now.
-Is Siwon dead?
-I don’t think so. But if he’s not, it’s cause that wasn’t the intention.

Captain Rain followed his men into the building while others split up to surround it, trying to block every possible exit. The first floors had coffees and shops that a lot of the people who worked at the court or attended trials usually frequented.
To the Captain’s delight, in the middle of the confused crowd he recognized one very familiar face in one of the coffee shops. Some men lingered around, their guns barely hidden and their dark scowls marking them obviously as the kind of bodyguards no one would want to mess with.

Top calmly remained seated where he was. Besides, he was keeping an eye on three little kids, who were demolishing fries, and that meant he was too busy to worry about the approaching police Captain; or the commotion outside or all the cops running inside the building.
-Mr. Choi Seung-hyun.
-Ah, Mr. Jung Ji-Hoon, how are you?
-Fancy meeting you here.
-What’s all the commotion?
-A shooting just outside the court house.
-Really?
-Where is your wife?
-Mommy went to change Su Ki’s diapers. - Answered one of the little boys in a disgusted cute voice and with a hand over his nose.

Cheryl was happily rocking her baby girl while she breastfed her.
-Oh, you smart baby. You eat all your soup but you still don’t want to give up on your milk, do you?
Three cops barged inside the room, screaming loudly and pointing guns at her, making the small child cry.
When Captain Rain approached he could see two very annoyed bodyguards standing outside the babies’s room, hear a crying child and a woman’s angry voice loud and clear.
-Mrs. Choi, please. Calm down.
-Captain? Look, I don’t care what the hell your men thought they were doing! This is inadmissible!
The Captain looked around. His men were avoiding looking at anything except the floor. He sighed. They were obviously embarrassed even tough Cheryl Choi had been covered by a baby blanket. And they were sporting scrunch faces at the smell of freshly changed diapers that lingered in the room.
-I’m very sorry, Mrs. Choi. We just need to search every room and person in the building. They’ll be out soon.
With an angry nod of his head, the men hurried to search the room. The Captain used the excuse of trying to help the woman to verify the rocking chair and if he could notice anything she might have on her. Cheryl Choi sighed impatiently, her child still upset. Getting up, and putting her girl in the Captain’s surprised hands, she volunteered to be searched as well so that they would leave her alone faster. One of the men signalled a female officer that was outside.
When the blond woman sat back on the rocking chair she held out her hands. The Captain gladly returned the squirming little one.
After a few moments, the men had nearly searched every corner and item inside the room.
The Captain waited until the blond woman managed to calm the little girl. His men found nothing except a dirty diaper freshly changed and the push chair full of the necessary items to spend a day outside with a small child.
Still suspicious, the Captain lingered. The girl went back to feeding but soon was burping. Very soon which made the man frown. It meant Top’s wife had been taking care of the child for some time. Yet, that shot screamed of the woman’s style.
He left the room, politely apologizing again to the blond woman. His men informed him that no one could say for sure if Top’s wife had left the room or not. The two bodyguards had not moved. They only had confirmation of when she had left the coffee shop area accompanied by the two bulky men. The Captain looked around. The elevators were nearby but there were no cameras. He could not shake the feeling that somehow Cheryl Choi had been the one firing but if there was no placing her on the roof he had nothing.
Yunho and Il Woo approached him with serious faces.
-Well…?
-The shot was definitely from this rooftop but there’s nothing there. Place is clean. - Said Il Woo.
-Damn it! How do they do it?

Inside the babies’s room, Cheryl continued to coo her girl. She had time. No one ever thought to check a dirty smelly diaper for bullet casings and her push chair was one of a kind: custom made with all the accessories a professional sniper could need. Such a good thing that her girl had already fed before they entered the building.
The girl giggled happily after burping.
-Full tummy, huh? Oh, your Mommy just did a very risky thing. I promise never to do anything like that again, ok? I just could not let anyone get between me and my family. Nobody messes with that and gets away. Your Mummy is a blond tigress. Grrrrrr!!
More happy giggles followed.

Jaejoong waited around. Captain Rain showed up again looking even angrier than before.
-Captain… what happened?
-Ah, Mr. Kim. Coincidences. That’s what happened. Bloody coincidences. On the day I was expecting to be able to intercept whatever evidences Choi Siwon wanted delivered to him, the man who was to deliver them magically disappeared half way. No trace. Then Siwon gets shot. In his throat and his writing hand. Rather specific, isn’t it? Why not right in his head? That would be one shot only. And guess who is in that building? Top and his wife who happens to be suspected of having been a professional sniper killer. And it’s all just coincidences because I have no proof that there’s any connection whatsoever. Convenient, huh?
The Captain stormed away.
All the other cops seemed busy. In the distance, Jaejoong spotted Yunho. The tall man signalled he’d call him and the business man answered with a smile.

Returning home, Jaejoong kept quiet. Next to him, Jun Ki and Junsu were talking about the day’s events.
-You think it was Cheryl Choi who fired? - Asked Jun Ki.
-I remember looking up information about her when we studied Top. She’s scary good. Much better than I’ll ever be. She could easily pull that shot from that distance and still have time to shoot a second time.
-But she missed.
-Oh, no, I don’t think so. Didn’t you said she knew Siwon was going to try to cut a deal by handing evidences against her husband? I bet you those evidences were intercepted and she conveniently made sure that Siwon wouldn’t even be able to testify about them any time soon. Think about it. His throat? His writing hand? Even if he can type in a computer with his other hand, he’ll never be able to give a credible testimony like that. Nothing that could ever be used against Top.
-You guys are missing the most important detail. - Said Changmin.
-Which is? - Asked Yoochun.
-The sentence is tomorrow, Siwon doesn’t even need to be present and that means that he’s going straight from the hospital to jail. Where he’ll spend a really long time. Basically prison for life. The news said there’s a good chance he won’t ever speak again. I suspect that not being able to scream will not make his life prison any easier.
