One Friday night, Mr. Jung and Park Jung Min were still at Jaejoong’s house when Kim Heechul and No Min Woo arrived to spend the weekend over as usual. To everyone’s surprise, Heechul and Jung Min knew each other.
-Legend! - Screamed Jung Min.
-Mad Diva?! What the hell are you doing here?
The two hugged each other, ignoring the surprised faces around them, and jumped around laughing. After a while, Heechul pulled Jung Min to where Jaejoong was staring puzzled at them.
-Hey, Jaejae, remember I told you about Mad Diva? From the architect uni? It’s this guy right here!
Heechul playfully punched Jung Min in his shoulder.
-Always making us gay dudes wonder about you, you damn cock tease. I lost contact with you. How is it that I find you here of all places?
-Dude, I have a girlfriend, don’t get me into trouble with those old stories. Damn it, I knew I recognized Kim Jaejoong’s name from somewhere.
Jung Min shook his head in bewilderment before finishing his answer.
-What have I been doing? Let’s see. I work as a free-lance architect and own an apartment building. It’s cool cause I can relax, sit back and live from the rents. In fact, I usually only take small projects. But I’m still hanging with my best friend. I used to talk about him a lot: tall, too cute for his own good, muscled, gorgeous? The one who had to drop out and became a cop. See if you can remember his name.
-Oh, and he actually was gay unlike you? Did he really end up as a cop…? Wait a minute. His name was… No fucking way! Are you serious?
-Yunho. Yep. Jung Yunho. Damn. I can’t believe this.
Heechul took a few more seconds and then yelled.
-Jae’s Yunho? He’s your Yunnie?
-Yes, he’s the cop who helped Mr. Kim, your Jaejoongie.
…
-Oh, shit! Oh, my God! Jaejoongie, you did end up meeting Dreamy Guy! I can’t believe it! - Screamed Heechul with a crazed face.
The group continued staring at Heechul, still not fully following what was going on.
-What are you talking about, Chullie? You mean you also knew Yunho at university? - Asked Jaejoong finally intrigued.
-Where’s the damn photo album? Junsu, come here. You remember us from uni, right?
Changmin approached with an amused expression to see what all the fuss was about.
-So… are we going to find out we all knew each other or something?
Junsu was the one to get the photo album because Jaejoong was sort of petrified on the same spot. Yoochun and the others joined around as Junsu went over the photos with Heechul. Junsu and Jaejoong had some time ago created a mix between their university photos since they had gone to the same one.
-Ok, stop there. I knew Jung Min but we usually met just the two of us. He did introduce me to Jung Yunho, however the guy rarely had the time to join us. Still it was enough to name him Dreamy Guy. But there was one time he did came to our university. One of those football games when the other two universities would use our field. There!
Heechul triumphantly pointed to a picture demanding Jaejoong’s attention to it.
-See the tall football player? Remember him? This sex god on tall legs asked you out but you said no because of Kim Hyun Joong. I yelled at you for a week, threatened to give him your number and all that. Then Hyun Joong broke up with you and later Yunho dropped out of university and I sort of forgot I wanted to introduce you two. Damn… You ended up meeting again anyway.
…
-You mean Yunho asked Jae out when they were both at university? - Asked Yoochun with an astonished voice.
-Yep. And this stupid air head here said no. - Answered Heechul with a smiling nod in Jaejoong’s direction.
Changmin looked more closely at the pics and pointed at Hyun Joong.
-Is this Hyun Joong? It’s that lucky bastard. I remember him. He was the guy I kept finding with girls in the gardener’s shed. I think at this game I saw him with Jae and the next time I caught him in the shed… Well, let’s say that it was a meeting that left an impression on him. Soon after I noticed he stopped hanging around Jae and I never did catch him in the shed ever again.
-Oh, my God! So that’s why he finally broke up with Jaejoongie! Changmin, you are so awesome. You were already Jae’s bodyguard even before he hired you! - Yelled Heechul.
…
Heechul said the last words beaming at Changmin in such a way that Min Woo decided to casually pull the shorter man into his arms following it with a possessive hug which awarded him some hot kisses.
Junsu shook his head at Heechul’s display, very thankful that Taemin was upstairs studying and smiling at how the pretty man was the only person he knew that could rival in impropriety with his own boyfriend and waited for Yoochun’s remarks. But the man’s following words were not the lewd comment towards the kissing couple he was expecting.
-What I still want to know is what you were doing in the gardener’s shed. I never saw you with anyone, Changmin. I can almost swear Jun Ki here is going to be your first kiss. - Said Yoochun with a puzzled face in Changmin’s direction while his finger pointed at Lee Jun Ki.
Changmin completely ignored Yoochun’s remark as if he couldn’t hear him. As for Jun Ki, he moved nearer to the tall bodyguard.
-Yoochun, I can safely assure you that I’m not first anything, except obviously the first official boyfriend.
…
Jun Ki put his arms around Changmin’s waist and pulled the young man near him in a back hug, resting his chin on the broad shoulders with a satisfied smile especially when Changmin couldn’t help a slight shiver at the contact and a huge blush to his face.
Yoochun’s face opened so much that Junsu feared his jaw might collapse. He carefully placed a finger under Yoochun’s chin and closed his boyfriend’s mouth, whose eyes continued staring at the new couple.
Changmin felt a little embarrassed and annoyed with Yoochun’s reaction. But he was loving how Jun Ki had simply decided to just show everybody that they were together. “Maybe this was how he felt when I forced him to admit that he liked me. This butterflies in the stomach thing.”
They hadn’t even really talked about their relationships status and now the man had taken the matter into his own hands, leaving it up to Changmin to deny or confirm. The fact that Jun Ki seemed so happy to announce that they were together warmed him up all over, even if it did annoy him a little. It also put old fears to rest that he hadn’t even realised he still felt. With a small sigh the bodyguard decided to forget why his previous long relationship had been a secret. No way would he ever let Yoochun find out that he had had a relationship with a teacher at university.
-Well, finally. You two sure danced around each other. - Teased Mr. Jung.
-Actually, I think they are together for about a month now. - Said Junsu.
-What? And you didn’t tell me? How could you, Junsu? - Pouted Yoochun.
-Oh, get a life, Chunnie. - Grumbled Changmin, leaning back against Jun Ki and holding the arms around him. He was feeling very happy right now. Enough that he didn’t care that he would have to put up with a nosy curious greasy voyeur Yoochun until the novelty wore off.
Meanwhile, Yoochun was pouting terribly at his mischievous boyfriend, enough to make Junsu laugh.
-I’m sorry, baby. But… You know? You’d make a terrible private detective. A good bodyguard but a bad detective. How come you never noticed how many nights Minnie wasn’t sleeping here?
-Don’t be so hard on him. You know the man only has eyes for you. - Teased Mr. Jung.
Yoochun was about to turn an angry face to the old man when he found himself being kissed and hugged tightly. Junsu rarely allowed proper kisses in public as a bit of payback. When they were in high school and university, Yoochun had embarrassed the shy man countless times with public displays of affection that bordered on almost public sex. When Junsu finally had enough of that, he started calling the shots and Yoochun found himself having to adapt. The small part of his brain that was still functioning told him this was Junsu’s way of apologizing for not telling him such a juicy gossip but… his brain was about to shut down and he didn’t care what time it was or how many people where in the house. He was going to have to find a way to get Junsu in their room and fast.
…
Oblivious to the commotion and happy couples around him, Jaejoong just continued to stare at pic after pic, remembering that specific month. He could not believe the surprising news that once upon a time Jung Yunho had asked him out on a date.
Jaejoong remembered how confused he was at the time. He had refused to confide in Heechul but he was frustrated with Hyun Joong’s behaviour. He had started to feel used. The guy never wanted to assume that they were dating, however Jaejoong had slowly realised that he was more than happy to somehow make sure everyone knew that they were fucking. He hated that but was only starting to rebel against it.
Jaejoong thought about the day from the pics. Hyun Joong had come to meet him and he had been so happy about that, his smile huge as he looked at the guy. Only to have it fall soon after as he left almost immediately. He had felt tempted to end everything. However, the second Heechul nagged him, Jaejoong put all his defences up and refused to admit he also wondered if he was making a mistake.
The business man looked closer at the pics that showed the visiting players in the background. Looking at the pics it was as if he could see that day all over again.
He was standing with Heechul under the cherry tree, their favourite spot, when a ball was kicked their way. A tall, muscled, gorgeous, smiling guy approached them and, while saying hello to Heechul, just froze staring at him. Jaejoong had loved that reaction from the striking man. For a few moments he actually considered saying yes to a date but he couldn’t shake the feeling he would be cheating on his boyfriend. In the end, he even had to get away from the football field before he gave in to the temptation because the guy kept looking his way with an adoring hopeful look and it was making him melt all over.
Heechul spent a long time threatening he would hook him up with Dreamy Guy. Then a few days later Jaejoong really was free and single but he was also too devastated to care.
Jaejoong slowly passed a finger over Yunho’s face. It really was him. He was still having trouble believing it. The hair was much longer, the teeth a bit crooked, the smile incredibly goofy, and yet he could recognize Yunho completely in those eyes. They already had the same intensity.
He wondered if they would have worked together then. Yunho seemed to be more confident in relationships at the time judging by how quickly he had asked him out. And even if he himself was wearing his hair blond and as long as a girl’s and going as far as behaving a bit girly due to Hyun Joong’s influence, it was also around that time he had restarted doing martial arts. He could just imagine Yunho supporting and encouraging him. Jaejoong sighed and couldn’t help but ask himself: “Where were you all my life?”
…
Heechul finally let go of his boyfriend and noticed how Jaejoong was staring at the pics. He pulled Jung Min and Junsu aside, earning himself a nasty glare from Yoochun.
-Should we make Yunho remember this as well? - Asked Heechul.
-No. Let Jaejoong process it. This is… this is better than great. At least for Jae this is like the final piece he needed to believe that what he feels for Yunho is perfectly ok. - Said Junsu.
-Well, from what I’ve seen so far, Yunho doesn’t need any final clicks inside his head. He’s just waiting until the trial starts to finally talk with Jaejoong. He knows that in the court’s corridors while waiting for the turn to testify there will be plenty of opportunity to talk and Jaejoong will have nowhere to hide or run. My money is on Yunho asking him on a date right after saying “hi”. - Added Jung Min.
…
At the police station, late at night, in between changing shifts, some day cops were still doing paperwork. Yunho was one of them but from time to time, he nervously looked at the clock and then at the calendar. Il Woo stared at the man with a smiling face.
-You do that a lot. Trying to make time move faster? It doesn’t work like that.
-Huh?
Ever since Yunho had returned to active duty, he had been paired up with Il Woo while Il Woo’s former partner got assigned a rookie cop. It was working quite well since Il Woo was normally very calm and had enough influence over Yunho to keep him calm as well.
-The clock. And the calendar. You keep staring at them.
-No.
-Right. I must be seeing things. So, do you like him?
-Huh?
-Do you like him?
-Huh? Who?
-Come on. Don’t play dumb, Yunho. You do it too well. I might start to actually doubt your intelligence. Do you like Kim Jaejoong?
Yunho was caught by surprise and couldn’t avoid a tell-tale blush to his cheeks.
-No. There is nothing romantic going on between us.
-And sexual?
-Nothing. Mind your own business.
Yunho crossed his arms with an annoyed face.
-You should ask him out if you miss him so much. It was pretty obvious that there was something going on between you two. Don’t get it why is that you’re waiting to see him at the trial instead of visiting him. I mean... He’s gorgeous and sexy as fuck. And that is coming from a guy who likes girls.
-We know almost nothing about each other. - Sighed Yunho with a defeated look.
-That’s why they invented dating, duh? Come on, you need someone to take to our nights out. I have Eun-bi, Soo Hyun has Song-yi, Min Ho has Jan Di… You are always the one left alone. Go for it, man. Don’t overthink it, just do it.
Yunho sighed again and looked at the calendar. The trial day was getting closer but his courage seemed to be getting smaller.
…
Inside his office, Captain Rain was furious.
No leads on any of the murders and disappearances. All his men had desks full of files with almost no information. He had his superiors nagging him non-stop. Kind of frustrating when one of the men missing was high up in the police hierarchy. That meant that there had been a lot of cover up going unnoticed on a lot of things. And maybe more was still going on.
Perhaps that explained why it had never been possible to get a warrant to search Park Ri Ho’s club in time to find anything useful even when they would sometimes get anonymous tips.
He really hated things happening right under his nose.
A cop being corrupt was nothing new, from time to time, one would slip up and get caught. Like that damn mole in his own station. The woman had used the phone on her new desk to call the people to whom she sold information. She never suspected her new assignment meant she was being watched. Rain had felt rather pleased when he listened to the tapes.
They could not prosecute the guy who had the news web site because he was refusing information and refusing to give money. Apparently all the money he had ever given her had been in cash and therefore no records existed to link her to the guy except that one phone call which wasn’t enough. However it was enough grounds to fire her.
But the best had been the second phone call, to Siwon’s man, Min Joon-gook, when he agreed to pay up front and also requested her to be on the look-out for when they sent the video regarding Yunho. That second phone call earned her some time in jail. And luckily for his own neck no one thought to ask what video that was or why it hadn’t showed up.
The Captain felt a bit unsatisfied that he also couldn’t link her to Sang Oska passing on information to Geun Suk but he could live with that one, much as it infuriated him. Besides he was sure that Sang Oska had learned his lesson and would make sure to keep Geun Suk well behaved from now on.
No, what really pissed him was corrupt cops high up. So high up the ladder that they were almost invisible even if anyone was trying to investigate if they were corrupt. One was missing at an exact time when missing meant you had done something to be on Top’s hit list. And the other ones seemed way too eager to have Top arrested. It didn’t smell right.
And now it positively stank.
He had just got news that Choi Siwon was trying to negotiate some deal. He had no doubt that the former lawyer would surely have stored evidences about Ri Ho and maybe some of those could be connected to Top. However, he had trouble stomaching that Siwon’s sentence could be lessened on account of that. Much as one could argue that Top’s crimes had probably damaged a lot more people, it just didn’t sit well with him that Siwon could find a way to pay less for his crimes. Or that someone high up was willing to agree to it.
…
The trial finally started. On the small corridors two groups of men came across each other. One was composed entirely of cops, all in their official uniforms causing quite an impressive amount of turned heads wherever they passed.
The other group was a bit of an odd mixture with different ages but the young men in suits that were the majority of the group were no less of a head turner. Whispers seemed to follow them. Are they actors? Models? Singers? Human?
Heechul looked ahead of his group and whistled.
-Uau! Look at that! Where are the ugly cops?
-Haven’t see one yet. Either Captain Rain has a similar hiring policy as Jaejoong or they happen to never be on duty when we’re around. - Answered Yoochun.
Jaejoong and Yunho stared into each other’s eyes with unsure faces. It was more than a month since they had last met. Junsu tapped Changmin’s shoulder and the two took upon themselves to start greeting everyone. In the middle of the huge mess that inevitably followed, eventually Jaejoong stopped in front of Yunho, hand stretched. Yunho froze for a second and breathed deeply before he shook hands with the business man.
Their eyes met with sudden awareness at the familiar jolt of electricity from that simple contact. Jaejoong managed to pretend it was nothing and hiding his hands in his pockets, smiled up at the taller man.
-You look good in uniform.
-You and your pretty boys don’t look so bad either. Increasing the collection? The kids, Jung Min, my father, even a known musician?
-Strength in numbers.
-Dad’s been telling me about your projects. It’s incredible work.
-Thank you. Oh, I really have to introduce you to someone. Come here.
Jaejoong pulled a bewildered Yunho by his hand. The cop was having trouble analysing this new confident beautiful man in front of him when he himself could barely hide how nervous he felt. Then he just forgot everything to stare at a very familiar blond head.
-Ren?
