Depressing Stuff
I assigned a paper for my students to write. Its topic was Things I Would Change About Myself or My Life."
I got three papers saying they wanted to change where they lived because of the drug dealers and police knocking on the door looking for people they don't know, and because other kids laugh at them for living in the "projects;"
I got one saying he would change his weight, because people call him "chubby" and "faggot" and make fun of him;
I got one saying she wished that her half brother could live with her, because right now he lives with his biological father and is being abused, but her stepfather can't get him because their mother died several years ago;
I got one saying he wished his grandfather hadn't died because they were very close;
and I got one saying that he wished his father hadn't been murdered in Chicago a few months ago. That's why he moved to AR, he had been living with him apparently, and he was stabbed trying to stop my student's aunt from being beaten by her boyfriend.
Feeling a little helpless right now. I expected a bunch of "I wish I was out of school" or "I wish I was in the NBA."
