Title:  Songs of the Sea God
Prompt:  Trident

The sea god waved his trident in the air and watched as the waves grew higher and the winds blew stronger.  He listened to the song of the waters and joined in as the small sailing ships were tossed around.  He made up words to fit the chorus and each time another ship sank he sang it louder, throwing the trident up so that the waves practically met the clouds.  The clashing sounds invigorated him and he danced until he grew tired.

Then he slept, waking to the sounds of a widow mourning her loss.  Now the sad song held his attention and he let her cries wash over him as the waves washed over her drowned husband.  A younger woman joined in her song and the god heard of a second ship that carried the widow’s son who was to marry the younger woman; a ship that had not returned and remained at the mercy of the seas.

He rose and planted his trident in the sand.  At once the seas grew quiet, the grey clouds turned white and the sun shone through.  A gentle breeze played across the waves and a ship’s sail appeared over the horizon.  He raised the trident and the breeze gained strength, sufficient to blow the ship safely into harbour.

Then voices were raised in praise and thanksgiving and joyful songs filled the air.  The old god sang along, sharing in the happiness of his people, enjoying for once being in harmony with them.
