Author's Notes: I'm having a nostalgia day, I think. Based off a random Tenten drabble of wolfieziri's from back in the day. I'm still waiting for a transcript of those hissed conversations... ♥
Neji wasn't sure what woke him up exactly.
Oh, wait.
Now he was.
Exhaling a sigh through his nose, his previously-tense body relaxing again. Tenten'd wound herself around him again. A few years ago, he would have wondered how such a self-sufficient girl would be so clingy at night. Now? He just accepted it. The fact that he hadn't jolted awake but instead went through a momentary sleep-fog was telltale of just how used to it he was.
Trying to keep his movements as little as possible, he lifted his head so he could adjust his arm from where it was currently pinned under his side. Tenten's sleepy murmur filled his ear as she snuggled closer, nuzzling his shoulder and tightening the grip around his waist while his heart thudded in his chest. His bare chest. Between practice and the summer weather, wearing anything more than pants would've been too much. And though Tenten's hand rested lightly on his stomach, he was preternaturally aware of each and every point of skin contact.
He thanked Fate for allowing Lee to be on the other side of Tenten. He'd never live down the blush that currently covered his face.
Tenten gave another wordless murmur, hooking a leg over his before relaxing back into sleep. Her head rested on his, and he could feel her warm breath ripple through his hair to gently tickle his neck.
Great.
How was he supposed to sleep now?
...
He closed his eyes and slowed his breathing, pushing the little un-gentlemanly thoughts away. She was his friend and teammate and asleep and don't forget Lee's in the tent as well. And remembering Lee only served to wake Neji up more.
Don't think about it. Just go to sleep.
Tenten's fingers twitched, just a little, reminding him they were there. He smiled in the dark. Moving carefully, his hand found hers, and his arm came to rest on hers as well. Their fingers linked loosely so that she could pull away easily when she woke.
But he did fall asleep, soothed and smiling.
