Chapter 12 - Subterfuge
‘What about the witnesses?’
YooChun stopped breathing at the question. Shit. ‘Damn, we forgot about that. Damnit!’
‘...’
‘Shit HyoRi, this is not good. This is not good at all.’ It wasn’t like YunHo to overlook things but even YooChun didn’t think of it. Damnit! I wasn’t even wearing a disguise. Knowing that YunHo prefer to settle things himself, the dozens of YunHo’s men there on the scene would undoubtedly control any information from leaking to the police about JaeJoong, making sure that the authority would only think everything was aimed and happened to Jung YunHo alone. Whether giving bribes or threats, it wasn’t a problem for them. They will collects all the information for YunHo. And the civilians will surely have no problem identifying YooChun as the man who took JaeJoong. YunHo’s men - even the traitor - will definitely sense something especially now that YooChun will - have to - disappear. ‘God, now what?’
‘Don’t worry, I’ll...’ HyoRi trailed off, ‘I’ll think of something. We’ll just go through YunHo’s plan for now. You get JaeJoong to somewhere safe and I’ll make sure Ji Ho’s history. I gotta plan things fast before the bastard could smell anything.’
YooChun glanced at the only passenger on the backseat. ‘Okay. HyoRi, try to contact KyuHyun. He only works under YunHo’s order but we have to try and ask his help. Maybe we can determine the traitor’s identity faster if he’s willing to help.’
HyoRi groaned at the other end. ‘That’ll be hard. He’ll disappear as soon as he heard the news. He doesn’t work with anyone but YunHo.’
YooChun bit his lips, agreeing. ‘… Just fucking kill Ji Ho and all his men then. I’ll be off the radar until things settle down. Take care of yourself, and YunHo. Make sure ChangMin’s the one taking care of him whatever happen. Ji Ho’s men shouldn’t be allowed a damn chance with him.’
As soon as he ended the call, he got out of his car and destroyed the phone. He still has to destroy his current car and change their vehicle before heading to a safe house far, far away from Seoul.
A young man with brownish hair walked down the busy street of Tokyo with his head bobbing to the loud music from his headphones. He strangely had his eyes closed, humming softly to himself but somehow still managed to avoid bumping into anyone or tripping his way. He stopped right as soon as a car pulled off next to him. He opened his eyes and smiled, extremely pleased. His hand was already working to decrease the volume of his music.
The driver with a long scar across his right cheek got out and opened the backdoor, bowing his head respectfully. The young man hopped into the car without acknowledging the scarred man but grinned at the man inside instead. “Rei-sama.” Pocketing a bulky transparent plastic bag from his jacket’s pocket, he smoothed out his attire and gave it to the man.
Anyone could’ve recognized the contents in an instant. Freshly acquired human’s tongue and eyeballs.
“Clean?” Rei asked about the body just to be safe. He’d had enough problems as it was.
“Uh-huh. Gave him to the dogs like Rei-sama instructed. Bathed the leftovers in acid. No trace left but those things.”
Rei smirked. “A job well done like always Xiah. Good.” It was the reason why he trusted him with the job in the first place.
The said man beamed brightly like a child. “Rei-sama never asked for souvenirs before. What’s up this time?” He tilted his head and frowned. “Will Rei-sama tell me now?”
The older man barked with ugly laughter as he held the transparent plastic bag in mid-air. The car was built with sound proof quality in which the driver will not be able to hear any conversation happening at the backseat unless the passenger wanted him to so it was safe for him to tell. Xiah had never leaked a word about his job to anyone. “He betrayed me. The fucking traitor!” He sneered, “even if he’s my uncle, I will not show him any mercy. I’d warned him once. How dare he try to ruin me again!” His eyes suddenly glinted with a flicker of strange delight. “Xiah, tell me, do you know these things are edible?”
The other shrugged.
Rei laughed. “They are. Delicious treats too. At least for me, nothing tastes better than the flesh of traitors. Why wastes them? Odd how they’re the perfect ingredients for exquisite cuisines you know.”
Xiah said nothing but increased the volume of his music. That was his signal. Rei laughed and assured him of the payment as the young man opened the door and stepped out, smiling one last time before he closed the door.
As the car droves away, Xiah stood there unmoving. His face grew taut when the car’s no longer in his line of vision. He hates men who can’t handle their personal matters themselves. No wonder he refused to acknowledged Rei as a Yakuza. Xiah can’t help but pitied how one of the most honourable Japanese Yakuza has been degraded under the lead of such man.
He snorted, making sure his Ipod was at its loudest before he began walking away, head once again bobbing to the music coming from the blaring headphones.
As soon as JaeJoong opened his eyes, he knew what happened. He remembered. He almost burst into tears because of that but the sound of the doorknob being turned halted his need. When his YooChun hyung appeared, it was instantly replaced with an overwhelming anger that got his whole body frozen.
YooChun however smiled when he saw JaeJoong. “You’re awake. Don’t worry,” YooChun said as he put the tray of food on the table beside the bed. “YunHo’s in safe hands. HyoRi and ChangMin’s watching over him,” YooChun assured confidently despite knowing YunHo was still in the Emergency Room. He hadn’t contacted HyoRi after the first time - and he’s not planning to anytime soon as agreed - but the news was all over the place. It had been the major news for Korea since yesterday, prompting even the Ministry of Defence to give comments about the unexpected incident.
YooChun had made a mental note to keep JaeJoong away from the television or at least, he has to supervise what the boy watch because of it.
YunHo had given the full responsibility of protecting JaeJoong to him. He can’t afford to worry and think about anything else. And JaeJoong shouldn’t too.
“JaeJ-“
“And I should trust them because?!” The boy questioned angrily, his eyes glaring at YooChun intensely as he pulled the man closer and began shaking him. He hadn’t forgiven YooChun for abiding to YunHo’s order. No, he’ll never forgive him.
YooChun was taken by surprise at the action and the malice radiating from JaeJoong. His hands immediately landed on top of JaeJoong’s. “JaeJoong calm down!”
“Where did you brought me to?! Bring me home! I want to see Master! How is he?! Bring me home now! I want to see him!”
YooChun was getting dizzy with the incessant shaking so - mentally saying sorry to JaeJoong - he applied more pressure on his hands, causing JaeJoong to reflexively release him with a wince. The boy looked at him with hard eyes but YooChun could see the terrified boy hidden behind it. He calmed down and sighed. “Listen JaeJoong. I know you’re worried about YunHo. I know you’re mad at us for doing this but please understand. It’s not safe for you.” Seeing JaeJoong was about to rebuke him again, the man continued, “Trust me. YunHo’s going to be just fine. He can take care of himself. HyoRi and ChangMin’s not gonna let anything happened to him too. So please, just calm down and let me take care of you until YunHo say it’s safe for you to go home okay?”
JaeJoong stayed silent for a while and YooChun watched silently as the boy’s eyes softened. “But it’s not fair…” He croaked, “what if-“
“No. You listen to me. YunHo entrusted you to me so I’m going to make sure I don’t fail him. You have to listen to me. You were there. You knew this is for the best. YunHo said so.”
JaeJoong broke down at that. Only after a few hours did he stopped, hiccupping as YooChun coaxed him to eat only to start crying all over again. His watch was missing. Master...
HyoRi hissed, “Fucking cheat trying to kill me like that.”
The blonde with her chuckled as he finished inspecting her wounds. He had been worried for nothing apparently.
The bruises are healing quite fast. Most importantly, there was no gunshot. Ji Ho’s bullet only grazed her left shoulder and that was all. “There, there. He’s dead already, you killed him. Let it go now. The tension’s not good for the wound, or noona’s beautiful face. We wouldn’t want a wrinkle on your face, do we?”
She gasped then smiled cunningly. “HongKi-ah, do you believe me if noona said noona’s going to kill you too if you continue to smile like that? You know I’m still mad at you for only coming to see me now.”
He raised both eyebrows up with a slight chuckle. He pulled her right hand and kissed her wrist. Looking up to look into her eyes, he said, “You’ll kill me noona? Me? Can you kill me?” He licked her wrist and smiled, amused as the older tensed and whimpered. “And I’m sorry. But you know how hectic things at the company had been for the past few days. Stephanie can’t possibly handle everything herself and I need to find ways to stabilize YH Group shares too. But you know I love you noona.”
“Bastard.” She looked away bashfully. His lover might be younger than her, but his status as the Vice President for YH group showed that he was not someone to be taken lightly. He’s as serious about his work as he was about her.
The playful man was about to tease her more when her phone rang. He immediately let go of her hand and sat in front of her.
Not recognizing the number displayed, HyoRi frowned. She promptly put her fingers to his lips, asking for silence then answered the call.
‘Yo.’
‘It’s me.’
HyoRi’s eyes widened. ‘Wait,’ she said and motioned for HongKi to leave her alone. As the blonde closed the door, she locked it from the inside and went further into the room.
She had been waiting for this call for days.
‘YooChun.’
At the sound of his name, YooChun quickly asked, ‘News?’
“Damn bastard’s dead. Few of his men got away but we’re hunting them. They’ll be cleared soon enough, don’t worry. But I still can’t pinpoint who’s the traitor YooChun. KyuHyun’s missing too, he refused to work under me.’ She sighed and YooChun found himself holding his breath. ‘We’ll move YunHo to the mansion tomorrow... ChangMin said there’s nothing we can do for him anymore. We just have to wait.’
‘...’
‘I can’t wait for him you know. Things were getting a bit out of control so I’d called for a meeting of the Heads two days ago. I’d explained everything to them.” She snorted. “They give him a month but I’m not worried about them. It’s not easy to overcome their fear for YunHo. I’m sure we can handle them if they decide to do anything funny. I didn’t mention about the traitor though so maybe he’ll get reckless and try something stupid.’
YooChun sighed. He doesn’t know how to continue lying to JaeJoong.
‘You have to be extra careful,” HyoRi suddenly said. ‘We have to consider the possibility of them coming for JaeJoong. As long as YunHo’s alive, he’s still a valuable asset. All of us here can protect YunHo but JaeJoong only got you.’
YooChun nodded. He had thought about the possibility from the beginning. Although he’s sure only YunHo and possibly KyuHyun knew about the safe house, he’s still cautious about everything.
He ended the call and turned the phone off. Silently, he checked on JaeJoong and watched the boy sleep with a tired smile.
The other man was undeniably shorter and seemed more vibrant than JunSu ever does. He seemed temptingly powerless and helplessly naive - trusting. Despite that, it goes without saying that it was JunSu who was feeling rather uneasy being in the same room with the other man and not the other way around.
JunSu shook his head, knowing how ridiculous the situation was. He could even control his fear for Rei from showing and yet, here he was, getting stupidly restless over a young assassin. It’s absurd! And yet, he understood his instincts. After all, he can’t find anything about the man on papers no matter how much he tried to dig for information. It was as if Xiah doesn’t exist at all. And that’s more than enough reason to0 be careful.
“Please Xiah, have a seat.”
The shorter sat in front of him, smiling. “JunSu-san?” He asked and tilted his head.
Once again, JunSu was reminded of how much this man fooled people without even having to try. It was the exact reason he doesn’t trust him even though Rei himself had taken a great liking to him.
Enough to consider taking the young man with him to Korea to handle some important matters.
JunSu paused and looked up to meet the man’s bright eyes. He’s not going to waste time. “I am JunSu, Rei’s right hand man. It had come to my knowledge that Rei had decided to take you under his wings. He likes you enough to offer you a great opportunity. Now, Xiah, listen, and listen good. When Rei talked to you about going to Korea to expand the business, you will refuse the offer.”
JunSu carefully watched the other man as he waited for something - anything - but nothing came. There was no change in the other man’s expression. And nothing can be said from his still relaxed body languages as well.
“Why?”
JunSu snorted. “I’m not gonna lie. I don’t trust you. I don’t like you.”
Xiah blinked and laughed. JunSu could only stared, dumbfounded by the unexpected action. He was just about to say something when Xiah grabbed hold of his hand and suddenly he felt a prickling sensation near his wrist.
“Will you believe me,” Xiah said, his face suddenly dark and evil, “if I say you will die a painful death if I pressed the needle a little bit deeper?”
JunSu stuttered in shock. He can barely see the needle but he knew it’s there. Still, he can’t understand what the man meant. A needle can paralyze a man if used correctly but not kill him. “What?”
“A part of it is coated with a nasty and rare animal’s poison. I won’t tell what.” He smirked as JunSu tried to move. “The guns won’t be able to save you. Be careful now. Half a millimeter more and it’ll starts to kill you. Nobody can save you, even I can’t. After a few hours of agonizing pain, then you’ll die.” He chuckled. “Interesting isn’t it?”
It took all of his willpower to recover from the shock and to remain stationary. “You’ll never get out of the club alive.”
“I don’t have to. Your men won’t know I did something to you. They’ll be trying to save your life without even knowing how and poor you can’t move a muscle to tell them the truth.” He seemed thoughtful for a while. “Plus, Rei-sama likes me didn’t he? In the worst case scenario, I’ll just say I was defending myself. You’re jealous and wanted to get rid of me. It wasn’t entirely a lie anyway.”
“What the- What do you want?!”
“Nothing. I’m just playing around.” Xiah beamed and released his hold on the man. “Don’t worry.” The needle had mysteriously disappeared into thin air.
“You-“
Xiah’s face hardened once more. “Now you listen to me. I have no business with you for now so get the fucking out of my way. I will decide if I’m going to Korea with Rei-sama or not. I will do what I want, no matter what you say. You get that into your head and we’re good. Trust me you don’t want to mess with me. I’m not someone you can intimidate.” He smiled, mockingly this time. “And that’s, the end of this discussion. Now please, excuse me. Nice meeting you JunSu-san.”
When he reached home, Xiah climbed up his bed and stared at the ceiling. He tried to contact someone again but like the last two times, the call cannot be connected. Sighing, he closed his eyes. He’s coming to Korea, man. Get the fuck better soon.
YooChun closed the door carefully - silently - after making sure that his charge was indeed, peacefully sleeping. The sleeping pills never failed to work wonders with JaeJoong. But he makes it a must to keep the bottle out of JaeJoong’s reach. It’s been almost three weeks now and JaeJoong seemed to grow more distant with each passing days. He’s sure JaeJoong knew something was wrong now. And he doesn’t want to take any risk with the emotionally unstable boy.
He yawned again. He doesn’t know what’s wrong with him tonight. He’s been yawning since dinner. Maybe it was the boredom. After all, both he and JaeJoong had been stuck inside the safe house for days. Walking to the living room, he slumped down on the couch. He’ll just take a quick nap. Just a quick one. After all, JaeJoong’s asleep.
Or so he thought.
JaeJoong tiptoed out of his room after hearing no more footsteps. He glanced at the sleeping figure on the couch and for a second, felt sorry for the man. But he thought of what he saw on the news three days ago when his YooChun hyung was in the bathroom and he steeled his heart.
He’s going back. He has to. YooChun had lied to him. He has to go back. All that matters was how.
JaeJoong had been taking sleeping pills to sleep for about three weeks now and he quickly realized, it was his only chance. Instead of swallowing the pills, he kept it under his tongue. He’d been collecting the pills and recovered enough powder. Tonight, he’d put them in YooChun’s drink when the man wasn’t looking. He’s sure YooChun would be sleeping until tomorrow.
JaeJoong collected his wallet and took the key from YooChun’s pocket. He left the key in front of the door and walked to the main road. He had no idea where he was.
After almost an hour waiting, finally JaeJoong saw a taxi passed by that responded to him. He prayed to every God he ever heard of that the driver would be kind enough to send him home. He lowered his head to the driver’s window, clutching the star pendant tight. He was glad he didn’t lose the necklace as well. He doesn’t want to lose his star. Not his master.
The boy warily revealed the address and asked full with hope, “Can you take me there please?”
The driver stared at him with incredulous eyes. “Are you crazy?! That’s in Seoul! Nobody’s-”
“You can have everything in my wallet!” JaeJoong quickly shoved the man his wallet filled with cash and a few credit cards. He never used much of the ‘allowance’ given to him and he doesn’t mind spending them all to see his master again.
The old man stared and smiled, delighted at the bulky amount of cash inside the wallet. “Hop in kid. We’ll get there by morning.”
