Mark Kermode on Ken Russell: "somebody who proved that British cinema didn't have to be about kitchen-sink realism-it could be every bit as flamboyant as
Fellini. In the final period of his directing careers he makes what have been described as very strange experimental films such as Lion's Mouth and Revenge of the Elephant Man, and they which are considered to be as edgy and out there as some of the work he made in the 1970s"
You know, you get those longtime, trusted popular commentators/broadcasters who stick in their fields and through their humour, ability to pinpoint things perfectly, and their absolute faith in some sort of cultural ideals, become part of the richness of the culture for you. Like John Peel, Charlie Brooker, AA Gill, Steven Fry. And then you get Mark Kermode, whose stupid croaky mr reasonable quiffy nerd voice has been getting away without having any identifiable form of insight for years.
Here he cloaks everything he says in weasel paraphrasing, just in case the description 'edgy and out there' was a bit too left field for us.
