The garden was all hustle and bustle. Winter was just ending; the cold winds and frost gone for another year, and all the flowers were rejoicing.
Uther Snapdragon, the king of the Camelot Gardens, had announced a magnificent banquet in celebration of the return of spring. All the flowers had bloomed in anticipation, ready to welcome the warmth of spring once again.

Arthur Snapdragon, Prince of the Camelot Gardens, was the most gorgeous flower in the garden, rivalled only by his adopted sister, Morgana Rose. Morgana Rose was all style and class, with dark red petals that seemed to ooze sex appeal when she bloomed in spring. Arthur Snapdragon was a brilliant scarlet red, and his leaves were always pruned to perfection. All the flowers thought they were a perfect couple, and hoped to see Arthur Snapdragon pollinate Morgana Rose soon, as it was expected that they would create the most beautiful seedlings.

This year, all the flowers noticed, a new flower had arrived. He was unlike any flower they had ever seen, with small white petals, and a tiny green stalk. Gaius Bindweed ( a weed who had gained the favour of the king) introduced the little flower as Merlin Clover. He was from a distant garden, and although nobody knew, he was a weed.
Weeds were forbidden in the Camelot Gardens, in case they should infect the soil, or corrupt some of the more important flowers.

It so happened, that little Merlin Clover saved Arthur Snapdragon one sunny afternoon. A small bee had landed on Arthur’s petals, and threatened to take away some of his pollen. Merlin, feeling that Arthur’s pollen was far too beautiful to be wasted on a bee, swatted the insect away, thus saving Arthur’s pollen.
Uther Snapdragon was very grateful to little Merlin Clover, and assigned him to be at Arthur’s side, in case it should happen again. Instead of merely being Arthur’s guard, Merlin Clover ended up doing many tiring jobs for the Prince. He had to prune Arthur’s leaves, make sure his soil was fresh and organic, and occasionally even had to clean his petals.

Merlin Clover had made a friend with the flower assigned to Morgana Rose; little Gwen Daisy. Gwen was a kind-hearted flower, and always listened to Merlin’s complaining about Arthur. She would nod her petals sympathetically, and they would share stories about the flowers they served.

Soon, the end of spring was nearing and all the flowers were expecting Arthur Snapdragon to pollinate with one of the royal flowers of the garden. In fact Arthur did not want to pollinate with any of the royal flowers. The truth was, that Arthur Snapdragon and fallen petal over stem for Merlin Clover.
His hopes (or rather expectation) or pollinating with Morgana Rose had ended abruptly when he had caught her, pollinating with Gwen Daisy in secret. He had left slightly appalled, but very interested. The situation had presented the option of pollinating with one of the more common garden flowers.
Gathering up all his courage, Arthur Snapdragon had dared to confess his love to the little clover.
‘I love your short little green stem,’ he admitted one morning before all the other flowers had woken.
If weeds could blush, Merlin Clover would have. ‘But…but sire! I don’t even have any real petals!’
‘It doesn’t matter to me Merlin,’ Arthur Snapdragon declared. ‘I love your little white flower. I love how it shines in the spring sun!’
Merlin Clover bowed his petals in shame. ‘Sire, there is something I haven’t told you. I’m..I’m..I’m a weed!’ He cried.
‘Yes, Merlin,” Arthur Snapdragon sighed fondly. ‘Honestly, I have no idea why no one’s figured it out yet. You are a bit obvious.’
‘You…knew?’ Merlin Clover squeaked.
‘Of course I did!’ Arthur Snapdragon replied, ‘Well, Morgana told me, but I knew all the same.’
‘So, you wouldn’t mind pollinating with a weed?’ Merlin Clover asked shyly.
‘I think we’d make beautiful seedlings Merlin,’ the Prince cooed, stroking Merlin’s petals. ‘Pollinate with me?’
‘I thought you’d never ask,’ Merlin Clover grinned, and together, the two flowers pollinated.

On the other side of the garden, just beyond the fence of Camelot, Cactus Dragon turned to Nimueh Lily, a smug look on his prickly self.
‘I told you didn’t I?’ he grinned, as much as cacti could grin.
Nimueh Lily waved a leaf, flustered. ‘Yes alright. But the important thing is now Arthur Snapdragon will want to welcome weeds back into the Camelot Gardens. That is what is important, not this young, budding romance.’ She waved a leaf in the direction that could only mean Arthur Snapdragon and Merlin Clover.
‘Yes, I suppose your right,’ Dragon Cactus agreed, and they promptly began conversing about the effects of rain water verses tap water.
