Janet was expecting the source to be taller though.

And no doubt blonder, too, all things considered. It's just a 5'3" Korean-looking young woman in heavy armor, not a big ol' Elizabethan-speaking Norseman.

She lowers the weapon after a while and rubs at her nose. Ozone smells weird.

Some day Janet will get a straight answer out of Thor about why he talks like that, but that day has not yet come.

"Thank you," Ellen says. For a moment she almost salutes, and then remembers that she doesn't have to do that to people outside the Brotherhood. "It's my first day using it."

"The first day with something is always the most exciting. I'm Janet."

"My name's Ellen," Ellen says. "Pleased to meet you, Janet. Are you new here? I don't think I've seen you before."

"Fairly new," says Janet with a hand wobble, "I've ended up tending bar once already but I'm still working out where everything is around here."

Ellen nods. "It's kind of a weird place," she says. "Even for people with different upbringings than I had, it's still weird. You'll get used to it- it just takes some time."

"Probably. I'll catch on as I go along."

"So you're practising? I didn't know you could do that here."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"Oh yes," Ellen says. "Just as long as you don't hurt anybody and keep it away from the animals, anyway."

"What kind of animals?" asks Janet, "I mean I saw the horses, but are there other things out here?"

"Well, there's wild animals around, although I think people hunt those," Ellen says. "Sometimes people have other animals from home here. I used to keep Brahmin here, but I took my herd home."

"I don't think I want to know what you're protecting your cows from that you need a lightning gun."

Janet is thinking of Brahman cattle, but close enough.

"And other stuff too. I guess when you just have to get things to a door it makes bringing what you want from home easier."

[aaaaaaaagh_sky]

"Oh, no, this isn't for the cattle," Ellen says. "I'm with the Brotherhood of Steel back home- the military. We're at war, and this is a prototype weapon I'm going to have to use tomorrow."

"I don't think I've heard of them," admits Janet, "What country?"

This is a perfectly valid question when you come from a Marvel universe. Some countries go in for that sort of naming scheme.

"It's a long story," Ellen says. "It's... there really aren't any countries left back home any more. We had a nuclear war two hundred years ago, and we're only just starting to recover now. The Brotherhood is descended from the old American army, but there hasn't been an America in generations."
