It's not often that this particular redheaded woman is seen in the bar with anything on the table in front of her other than a laptop, but there are apparently exceptions to all trends because today the laptop is closed and set to the side so that there's room for the massive plate of pasta in front of her. Spaghetti carbonara with a huge crusty ( Read more... )

Nikita hadn't been back here in two weeks; a lot had happened in her own life. She'd thought she'd never see it again, since her original entry was back in D.C.

But surprise, surprise, walking into the walk-in closet in the suite she was sharing with Michael brought her here.

She stopped, checked her entry, and reassured, headed for the bar. "Hey." A nod to the red-headed woman, then Nikita's nose twitched. "That smells incredible."

"And tastes even better," the woman answers with a huge grin. "I bet if you asked nicely they could get you some of your own."

And there is an empty seat across the table. Barbara has her own chair, so it's clearly not something she needs for herself.

Conversations struck up here with friendly people were always interesting, so Nikita slid into the nearby chair and signaled to a wait-rat. "Nikita. And you've just reminded me I haven't eaten for 10 hours." She gave Barbara a small deprecating smile. "I wasn't sure I'd get to visit this place again. I just changed residences." What with the last one getting trashed and blown up and all.

"Barbara," the redhead answers, setting down her fork for a moment so that she can reach across the table and offer her hand.

Nikita shook her hand, not going for the intimidating grip, but measuring Barbara anyway. Not helpless; no one here seemed to be, from what she'd seen, even with the chair. "Nice to meet you. How long have you been coming to Milliways?"

To the wait-rat, she said, "What she's having, and a Coke, please."

Barbara made no attempt to disguise the fact that she was looking Nikita over. "Years now." Four and a half or so by this point.

"Yourself?" She cocks her head before hazarding, "New?"

"It shows, hmm?" Nikita grimaced. It had been ages since she was the 'new kid' anywhere. "This is my third or so visit. I took a horse ride out around the perimeter last time, to get the feel of the place. It's been... educational."

"Now there's a diplomatic way to put it," Babs laughs.

Nikita shook her head as the wait-rat brought her drink, and she nodded her thanks.

"New species, to start with. Then a bartender who turns into a cat, and flirts as both species." Nikita gave Barbara dry look as she sipped her drink. "Time travel... did I miss anything?"

"You've barely scratched the surface," Babs smirks. "Different worlds is one of the big ones."

Nikita frowned around the rim of her glass, not sure she was following. "Planets? Or something else?" she asked, cautious. "I assumed people came from different times and places, but...."

"Well, planets sure, but more than that. People from places with different physics, for instance." She grins. "I mean, how many people do you know who can turn into cats?"

"Zero, although I have my doubts about one of my former co-workers," Nikita joked, thinking of Amanda. "I assumed it was some kind of advanced science... that's not the case?"

Barbara shrugs. "Most people call it magic. Even the ones who do it. So..." Why not agree?

Nikita wasn't so hard-headed that she felt compelled to stick to one definition; but she was curious. "How does it work? Do people get taught 'magic' the way we teach science? Or is it more of an art?"

The wait-rat returned with her food, and she happily started to dig in, carefully but quickly, like any good soldier. Then slowing down as she became self-conscious.

"Depends on where they're from." Babs shakes her head. "With so many different worlds, well, there's plenty of different approaches."
