There is a young girl out on the open grass, this afternoon, sitting in the style called 'Indian-style' at school (though Rae had never really known why it was called that - she had never heard of any Indians sitting like that). She holds an early flower cupped in her hands, bright yellow in the sunlight ( Read more... )

Rae's out there for only a short while before she's joined by a familiar face bearing snack foods.

"Hello again, kiddo!"

The hand holding what is currently a trio of match-sticks, goes immediately flat against her leg, hiding them until she can see who's coming towards her.

It's... a lady. She looks sorta familiar... and against the background of the bar... oh!

"Remy!" See the kid beam.

The 'quick, hide it!', motion gets a brief, curious look from the young doctor, but the look soon fades, and Remy ruffles Rae's hair gently before settling on the grass beside her.

"You're getting big."

"It's been forever! I'll be ten in June." The match-sticks move with her hand as she surreptitiously tucks them under her knee.

...Oh? Isn't that? interesting. And quite lovely! It's always nice to see a young person exploring her talents.

"That's a lovely gift you have there."

And, with the sudden startlement, that right there is an automatic gesture to hide the transmuted object (currently an oak leaf) under her hand. Her hand is flat against her knee, hiding the leaf, as she stares warily at the person who spoke.

"What?" she says, after a moment, as though not knowing what he's referring to. Maybe he didn't really see anything. Maybe Sunshine's expression of wary confusion will be believable! And maybe the sun rises every morning by way of an elaborate system of pulleys, controlled by the Antares master race on Mars. Even at this age, Rae is a poor liar.

"It's okay," Hao says. He can hear the nervous chaos of her thoughts; it's something he has heard far too often from others like himself, and it makes him sad and angry all over again.

"I'm not going to hurt you." He crouches down beside her, projecting strong older brother/not a threat. "Can I see?"

The wariness doesn't abate much - the girl is skittish, and keeping her word to her grandmother is probably the most important thing that has ever been asked of her.

The shirt she's wearing is too big for her, obviously second-hand, but the jeans are new enough, and the sneakers are at least gently-used. When she shrugs her shoulder, her shirt moves, giving her a slightly lopsided appearance. "It's just a leaf," she says, as though it were nothing, letting him see the oak leaf she held, the one that still wanted to go back to being a dandelion.

"Nice magic you're doing there," says the woman with the long dark curls who is watching from a few yards away.

The object cupped in her hands (currently a cardinal feather) is quickly hidden, let fall beneath her knee, as the nine-year-old looks around, warily.

"A red feather!" Ma'at says, quite charmed.

Feathers are her symbol, after all.

"I was just playing with it, ma'am," Rae says, looking up at her. No magic here! Just a kid who picked up a feather she found! Right?
