[OOM: Coping MechanismsTravis cannot, he's learned rather suddenly, sleep in an empty flat. The flat is not completely empty, and it has not been the first time Nicholas wasn't in his own room, grinding his teeth loudly enough for Travis to hear through the door, but everything about it just feels wrong now. It's the absence of both Nicholas and ( Read more... )

Well, it's not so much the designs or the sprawling that bothers Vergil. It's the fact that the Huragok dropped one of its tools and it fell down between the human and the cushions.

Perhaps it can root around back there for the leverage wrench with one tentacle without disturbing anything.

Luckily, unlike a certain other member of his family, Travis is not the sort to just randomly throw punches at sudden contact.

He will shout quite loudly when he sees what's touching him, though.

He's... he's sleeping, right? This is just a very vivid dream, surely.

A vivid dream with a distinctly unpleasant smell. Try though one might, Vergil can't entirely adjust its diet enough to eliminate the reek of the gases that keep it afloat.

It does yank its tentacles back very quickly and try to look harmless, though.

Travis blinks at the... thing. The whatever-it-is. It probably has a name, but he hasn't quite worked up the brain capacity to wonder if asking will do any good.

He's just awake enough to reach out and touch what he assumes to be its snout, and just tired enough to forget about wondering if it bites.

It doesn't bite. It does blink- first the top pair, then the middle pair, then the bottom pair- and let out an apologetic little arpeggio, but it doesn't bite.

The human doesn't seem violent, at least. That's a start.

No, not violent. Not unless provoked, anyway. Just very, very confused.

"Hullo," he says, rather uncertainly.

It twitters, tilting its head to one side, and then looks back towards the human's legs. Would the human mind very much just scooting them over a little bit? It's almost sure the wrench is within reach.

It takes Travis a moment to figure out what the it-thing wants, and then slowly sits up to give it a bit of room.

Just to be on the safe side, he pulls the duvet away as well. He'd hate to see it ruined somehow. It's still fairly new.

Ah! There it is. One quick yoink! from between the cushions and it's got a shiny new wrench to show for its troubles. So sorry, it never meant to be any trouble.

No, it is not going to hug the human, it is merely as pleased as its icon.

Travis can't help but peer down at the area where the wrench was pulled from.

"How...?"

Never mind. He probably doesn't want to know.

Oh, that's easy enough. One tentacle points upward- see? There's pieces of a disassembled audio speaker up there on one of the rafters. It dropped one tool by mistake, that's all.

Right. The next question that he can't help but ask is, "Why?"

It's been a very odd day, you see.

Alas, one might as well ask a human why they breathe as ask a Huragok why it fixes things. It was there.

Vergil merely twitters curiously in answer.

Travis shakes his head. He wasn't sure why he expected the blue thing to answer him. It's a blue thing! Blue things don't talk. Probably.

"Do you play fetch, or... Something?"

Good one, Travis.

It looks at him.

We're almost sure the prrrrt noise it makes is from the forward end and not the back, but one never knows with aliens.

"No? All right."

He's back to wondering if he should be worried again. It's not gonna like, spray him with some sort of acid or something, is it?
