Completely Non-Alcoholic Happy Hour

Teller's just as surprised as most people tend to be when he receives the napkin from the Bar. He's a little confused, because he's not really at all the drinking sort. And he's pretty sure whatever proper magic controls this place should have picked up on this ( Read more... )

Teller put up the most interesting Happy Hour conditions Mia has ever seen. And she wants to test both of them to their limits.

Even though she only knows one language, she thinks she has more chance at the non-English language offer than the magic trick offer. He likely can't learn her magic and she hasn't had a need to develop skills in prestidigitation.

Her approach is simple. She sits down at the bar, smiles at Teller, and gives him a display of the sort of magic she can do. Her hands come together on the bar and she moves them up. Beneath them, a drinking glass made of ice is taking shape. Once it's done, she puts a single ice cube in it.

Now what's she ordering, Teller?

Teller watches all this with fascination. No, he can't do that sort of magic at all. It doesn't even exist in his universe (far as he knows).

Back home, though, that drinking glasses with ice mean soda. So he finds a can of cola and slides it across the bar with a smile.

She shakes her head. Close but not quite.

She takes the ice cube out again, as it's redundant to have in a glass made of ice anyway, and holds it in her thumb and forefinger. She fans her other fingers out so that now she's holding four ice cubes. She drops them one at a time, letting them disappear into the ether, and she shakes her head until she has one ice cube once again.

Is that clearer?

This is some sort of a riddle or something. Teller takes a moment to contemplate it.

Water feels like the obvious answer, but if she could produce ice, then logically...

Okay, so maybe he's just being a brat, but he gives her a diet soda, instead.

He's lucky she's always been thin and difficult to offend. Most mothers who still have some leftover pregnancy weight wouldn't take too kindly to that.

Mia's never seen diet soda before, to be honest. It seems to her like it would defeat the purpose of getting a soda in the first place. So she picks it up, fascinated, but shakes her head all the same.

And since the ice isn't working, she just holds up one finger instead.

She'll keep looking at the diet soda, though. It's inna can!

He tries going in a different (and probably totally wrong) direction, the irony of this situation totally lost on him.

The first option on his board is Yoo-hoo, so that's what she gets. A bright yellow can of chocolate drink.

Once she reads the can, her face lights up and she nods in approval.

But now we have the interesting situation of never opening a soda can before and her face goes back to confusion.

She'll ask him about the normal way to open it later, however. For now, she gives the can a silent Alohamora! and thwocks the top with her thumb and middle finger. It opens with an odd pop and she pours it into her ice glass.

And now the drink itself gets an interested look. She's never had Yoo-hoo before but she was interested in the chocolate drink. It meets with her approval when she sips it, though.

Being a new mother, she'd also probably like knowing that it's caffeine-free (mostly).

He is interested in her rather odd way of opening the can. He also secretly hopes that her ice glass isn't inclined to melt too quickly, because Yoo-hoo is already fairly thin, as far as chocolate drinks go.

It is a plus but she's been told caffeine is more or less all right now as long as she doesn't overdo it anyway.

Her glass seems to be holding up just fine as she drinks. And the texture is quite a difference but not an unpleasant one.

She hands Teller the can of diet soda. Will he show her how to open it?
