There had been a pre-war saying in Vault 101: "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". Limited resources and a closed system with a long term outlook breed that kind of thinking. Ellen's put aside a lot of stuff she picked up on in the Vault, but not that attitude towards resource management. When she realized today that her Vault suit ( Read more... )

Aha! A woman doing woman's work. That's what he likes to see. So he plonks himself down opposite her and lights a fag, eyeing up her guns.

(No, that's not a euphamism. Her actual guns.)

'Alrigh', luv?'

The assault rifle is pretty normal looking as far as the AK-47 family of firearm goes. The other one looks a bit more like what later generations will call steampunk.

Ellen looks up and smiles. "Oh- hi, Mr.- I'm sorry, Gene, right? Yes, I'm doing okay, thank you for asking." She lowers the needle for a moment and lets the suit rest on her lap. "Just repairing some damage I took back home. How've you been?"

"Nope," says Ellen. "And at least part of that is thanks to that electric knuckle thing you gave me. We were attacked by mole rats at one point and they go down really fast if you hit them with it. They're the size of Dogmeat, there," she adds, pointing to the Blue Heeler under a nearby table. "Nasty things."

She may find herself somewhat surprised to be the recipient of a rather tight hug from behind.

More surprising, though, may be when she realises who it's from.

He might have been drinking lately.

"Eep!"

She doesn't get that kind of reaction from anybody. She doesn't 'eep' again when she turns around and sees who it is, but she sure has that expression on her face.

"Gus? Is that you, or...?" (There's enough men with faces like his around here that it's a valid question.)

After a moment, he does finally let her go and sits down.

"Who else would it be?" he asks.

Ya know. Aside from all those other guys.

"Well, I've met a couple of people here who look like you," Ellen says. "I had to be sure. How have you been?"
