There had been a pre-war saying in Vault 101: "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". Limited resources and a closed system with a long term outlook breed that kind of thinking. Ellen's put aside a lot of stuff she picked up on in the Vault, but not that attitude towards resource management. When she realized today that her Vault suit wasn't really fitting right any more- physical training with John-117 leaves a serious mark on the muscles- she decided to do something about it. Rather than buy a new set of clothes when she had a perfectly good if somewhat worn Vault suit and another perfectly good, partially armored, slightly less worn Vault suit, she bought a heavy-duty sewing kit from the Bar. She's settled down at a well-lit table with both the blue-and-gold suits and a measuring tape, and is currently working on patching and repairing the armor-supplemented suit wherever she can. Once she's got all the worn spots reinforced she'll worry about taking in the arms and legs and making the other size adjustments.

And then, because she has the time for it and because equipment care is vitally important to survival, she'll get around to working on the assault rifle and plasma rifle laid out on the table next to her as well. Domesticity comes in many forms around here.
