You know what's an excellent from of distraction?

A ten-year old girl who thinks you're awesome and likes to talk, that's what.

And would you look at that? That's just who has just spotted Dean.

"Dean!"

It takes Dean a second to swap out his 'on the prowl' grin for a brighter one more suitable for children.

But swap it out he does.

"Hey, kiddo. Long time no see. You do any more singin' lately?"

[hear_the_voices]

Anna nods.

"We're having a talent show. At church.

"Marissa and I are singing 'Don't Rain on My Parade.' Her mom is helping us.

"How are you?"

"I'm doin' okay. Kinda hungry, to be honest."

His grin goes a little crooked.

"You up for eating something, too?"

[hear_the_voices]

"Okay," Anna says, cheerfully.

"You shouldn't be hungry here. They have a lot of food. And it's all really good."

"You're tellin' me. You got a favorite?"

Who knows, maybe she'll have stumbled on something really awesome that Dean has never tried.

Well, there's always the possibility.

However, in this case . . .

"We could have pie . . ."

"Rhubarb?"

He's kidding.

Really.

[hear_the_voices]

"Okay," says Anna.

She has no idea what rhubarb is, aside from a really funny name, but if Dean is suggesting it, it's probably really good, right?

Dean stares at her.

"Yeah. Okay. I'm gonna skip the rhubarb today and go right for peach."

It's so weird how she says 'okay' to just about anything.

That ain't normal.

Is it?

The kid trusts you and your opinions, Dean.

What can we say?

"Peach is good, too," Anna says.

"Mom says the ones in the grocery store this time of year are just flavorless, peach-shaped rocks, though."

Dean grins at that one.

"Good thing Milliways ain't your mom's grocery store then, huh?"

Now where's the nearest waitrat . . .

[hear_the_voices]

Anna looks around.

"I don't think it would make a very good grocery store," she says, thoughtfully.

"There's no place to put a cereal aisle, or any big piles of fruit."

She leans forward and confides, "You should always take the oranges on the top of the pile. If you take one from the bottom, a lot of them fall in the floor."

Dean cracks up.

"You tellin' me you tried that? Taking the oranges from the bottom, I mean."

He'd do it in a heartbeat -- if he were twelve.

[hear_the_voices]

"Only once," Anna says.

"I was trying to help. And it was the one I could reach."

Oops?

"Oranges can really roll."

Learn from her mistakes, Dean.

"Which is kinda weird, you know? Because it's not like they're really round. Just mostly."
