The nights on Serenity are getting longer and longer, the closer they come to Kaylee and Simon leaving. Or maybe it's the more Mal mutters under his breath, the less he talks to either leaving party, that makes it so long

Demeter frowns at her since she looks like she needs a hug so comes over with a plate of fresh made bread with homemade jam,

"You look like you need this, dear."

Inara smiles warmly at Demeter, taking the plate from her. "Thank you so much. It looks amazing."

"Fresh made just a little while ago, now tell me what's bothering you."

[makesmeatease]

"Oh!" Inara looks surprised. "I...nothing really. Just. Family issues."

[wheatencrown]

"Family is rarely nothing, it usually tends to be more than it needs to be. I'll listen if it would help you to talk."

[makesmeatease]

Inara doesn't talk. It's that Companion training. Keep it all in. Talk about things that don't matter, not the inner most worries.

But.

"Two of our crew, on the ship I live on, are leaving. It's fine, if it weren't for my husband being so damn angry at them."

"Why does he say he's angry?"

Demeter has a couple ideas but she won't bring up her story unless it makes sense.

"He's losing part of his family. He's upset. I understand that but it's...tearing us all apart more than anything."

Sullenly, Inara takes a bite of bread.

"They won't be gone forever though and do you have good ways to stay in contact? I can understand that, its so easy to become selfish when you're hurting."

[makesmeatease]

"Yes, we can talk and they had better visit." Inara snorts. "Duìbùqĭ, I'm just frustrated. I can't find ways to keep Mal distracted for long."

[wheatencrown]

"Perhaps he needs more than distraction then. I had my daughter taken from me and now I only see her for half the year. If you'd like I could try talking to him since I can understand some of that anger. Though you all sound as if you have many more options and time to adjust."

"I've tried talking. Malcolm Reynolds is not a talker." Inara says, sardonically. Then, after a moment: "I'm sorry about your daughter. That's horrible."

"Not enough men are talkers, its quite a shame. In time we found a compromise but things have never been easy between some of my family since then."

[makesmeatease]

"Compromise. Another word my husband hardly knows." Inara smiles quickly. "Hopefully they will...come to be okay."

[wheatencrown]

"The only way my brothers started to learn it was when I created Winter. Men can be wonderful at times while just boys a lot of the time."

Inara studies the older woman for a long moment. "You created winter? Nice. I'm Inara, by the way."
