Tom steps through the House of Arch painting and heads for the Security Office, which he does on a regular basis these days. It's just that... lately there hasn't been much new information and not being an investigator by trade, there hasn't been much he could do. He has, however, read and enjoyed all of the Sherlock Holmes novels in hopes of being ( Read more... )

Later in the evening X approaches, head tilting as she approaches.

"You are working?"

Her hair is shoulder length, unlike before when it fell midway down her back. It is not difficult to notice.

"Ah, Laura, brilliant. I was hoping I'd see you."

He looks up, takes in the change of hair, but does not comment. There are more important matters at hand.

"I was writing up a report for you. I have news."

He does not look particularly happy. In fact, he looks grim, if anything.

"Oh," X says, eyes narrowing faintly.

"No one else is dead?"

It's only half a question.

"No, no," he says. "Come sit. I'd rather not speak too loudly of this. I was writing up a report, you see."

"Okay," X says, eyes still narrowed.

And then she sits down, sliding her chair close to Tom's.

"You can talk now."

"I have a power called Legilimency. It enables me to peer into someone's memories. Some living person's memories, that is. In the Security Office, I met a volunteer with a very unique gift. He's called Ned and he can wake the dead, but only for one minute. Of course, neither of our gifts would have done any good yesterday, with the, erm, head missing. Today, though, we were able to wake West enough for me to see this."

He hands her the parchment upon which he's written:

There was a figure before West, but it was not identifiable. The figure stood not quite as tall as he did, from his point of view. West leaped into the air, but he was pulled back to the ground. I sensed his panic, heard a loud crack like bones snapping, and I received a flash of thought that said "OW MY NECK!" I sensed one other thought, and I quote, "IT WAS A FUCKING METAPHOR".

"I wish I could have seen more, but the mind was too far gone."

X studies the parchment, frowning as she looks over each and every word.

Then she looks up at Tom.

Her expression is blank.

"I know who killed him."

Beat.

"Thank you."

"Really? You do?"

Well, she's done a damn sight better than he has.

"Yes."

Beat.

"Cameron."

This pause is longer.

"Her footprints were at the scene. And she does not understand metaphor."

Like X herself. And maybe a little worse.

"I will be careful," X says.

"When I arrest her."

"I have no doubt in you. I just hope she's the one. Ingress comes back this weekend, and I'd like this to be settled."

"I will tell you," X says.

"After I find her."

It will be good for Ingress to be safe, too.

"I'll finish my report. It's important to have accurate records."

He frowns.

"Do you think- Once this is settled, the boy's remains should be returned to his world. I saw thoughts of his mother. If she still lives, she should know what happened to her son."

"You can talk to Claire. If she is still here."

Beat.

"West was her boyfriend. They are from the same world."

"Right. I shall."

He's a parental type now. This kind of thing matters. If it was Ingress killed and forgotten on some faraway world...

He won't be thinking about that overly much, either.

"I'm sure you don't need my help with the arrest, but if you should, ask. In for a penny, in for a pound."
