There is a litter of kittens on a table, most of which are so tiny that their eyes haven't opened yet. They're forming a soft, mewing pile of fur, looking for the warmth of a mother that isn't there ( Read more... )

Although most of the Jumblies are busy a few of the younger ones are bored with brewing and have decided to go scouting for more interesting things.

They do not see cats very often, the deserts of their home are unsuited to felines, but the group has encountered cats before on their travels. These Jumblies however are the youngest in their party, and have never seen cats before, although they have heard tales.

When they scramble up the table, hoping to find food that they can steal and come across the small heap of mewling fur instead, they do not know at first what to make of it. The oldest of the three steps forward and speaks.

"Warm? Friends?" It is doubtable if the Jumblies can decipher any definite response from the kittens. The others step up to join their leader. They sniff delicately at the air, getting the kittens' scent. The youngest, who is coincidentally the smallest sidles closer and eventually, very gingerly, reaches out to stroke the nearest kitten.

"Newborns." It says to the others.

It is only moments before the three blue-scaled humanoids have climed into the pile of kittens, rubbing up against the fur, and enjoing the warmth. They have not yet noticed the large skeletal figure nearby. Perhaps they cannot see him. They have never seen him before, but perhaps in Milliways things are different.

OOC: Also not the bait intendee, but hopefully it's okay to join?

[OOC: Only because it's you]

Part of the reason they might not have noticed him is because he drew a hand back to watch with interest. Certainly, in Milliways things are different; people tend to be alert for unusual things and are more likely to see things that are really there.

The kittens are happy to have more bodies among them. Especially if they're suckable.

The Jumblies are themselves unusual... They would probably notice if someone started stroking the cats again.

The Jumblies don't mind being nibbled. The scales are usually good protection if something gets too strong a grip, but they certainly don't mind being gummed by babies, no matter what species they are... It tickles.

After a while, one of the Jumblies is subjected to skeletal phalange prodding.

What manner of thing are you?

The Jumblie in question is naturally suprised, but in a world where many many things are bigger than oneself you get used to being prodded after a while. It rolls out of the bundle, leaving the others, and moves to stare up at the cowl. Skeletons are not frightening. Well, not to Jumblies anyhow. Interesting, but not frightening by any means.

The small creature, whose name is ^x~', is curious.

"We Jumblies. Me ^x~'. You are?" The name out loud sounds like a cross between a whistle and a click, with a slight hum to finish. The humans that it has met have named it 'Yix' and proceeded to ignore the rest of the pronunciation.

I am Death

says Death. In whistles and clicks.

Omnious, hollow echoey whistles and clicks. Whistles and clicks as vocalised by Vincent Price or Christopher Lee. In small caps.

^x~' blinks at him slowly. There are very few things that speak the Jumblespeak other than Jumblies, and they've never met anyone human-sized who had the knack.

"Your newborns?" It asks in human, referring to the kittens, reluctant to hear the Jumblespeak coming from someone so... large.

They're with me.

But they're not his, so much.

They're clients.

A frown crosses its face as ^x~' thinks. Then it looks up, sadness written all over its tiny features.

"Dead newborns?" The pout isn't nearly so effective on someone quite as small as it is, but the general idea is there.

Not yet.

Death reaches down and tickles one of the kittens at the base of its neck.

I'm exploiting a loophole.

"Milliways makes them alive?"

Milliways gives them more time, Death says. It brings them out of my domain.

"... They can stay in Milliways?" ^x~' looks more than a little forelorn, but Death is probably not susceptible to such things. Probably.

Or go to a world that is not the Discworld.

Which is his world.

"If they stay in Milliways we teach them all things. Jumblies stuck in Milliways. Jumblies like company." Strictly speaking, ^x~' doesn't have the authority to offer this, but the kittens just look so sweet.

"We feed" it thinks for a moment, trying to recall the word, "kittens and teach to hunt. We keep safe." The overall tone is that of questioning, in a childish 'Can I? Can I pleeeease?' way.

Death approves of this!

Treat them well. I will be checking up.
