If anyone mentions that Esfir is looking exhausted when she comes down into the bar, they will be reported at the next Party meeting for being counter-revolutionaries. Or, they would, had she been back in the USSR. And feeling that pet-

Okay, they wouldn't have been.

But the sentiment is there.

And, yes, the sentiment is still there when she walks over the Bar and asks for a book. A very specific book, because she knows what humans do with figures of fame and tragedy, and she's cynical enough (and read enough newspapers) to know that she more than qualifies. Still, she keeps the cover turned to her body as she makes her way over to an out-of-the-way table.

She flicks through until she gets to the glossy white pages of photographs, and for a long moment she doesn't move.

Then, she brings the modeling knife out of her pocket, and starts to cut the pages out.

At least, she starts to. But she's tired and more shaken then she cares to admit, so it's barely five seconds before she yelps and drops the knife in favour of sucking her finger.
