After he was kicked out of the attic by Sarah Jane and Mr. Smith for being distracting when she had an article to finish, Luke went searching for a comfortable, quiet place to read his book (Flatland, Edwin Abbott Abbott ( Read more... )

And right in front of Luke, at a nearby table, is someone he might recognize. She is currently enjoying a mug of...something warm.

"Luke!" She calls, smiling. "Figured you'd get here sooner or later."

"Where is here?" he asks, coming to a stop in front of her table.

"Milliways. A bar at the end of the universe," she replies, casually.

First things first.

"Was it in your living room?"

"No, it was in Sarah Jane's attic."

She gestures to the table she's sitting at. "D'ya want to sit down?"

"Thanks. Does anyone else know about it?"

She shakes her head. "But there is something really weird -- I met Sarah Jane here, but...she's not the Sarah Jane we know. I think it's something like an alternate universe, 'cause here, she's married with a baby on the way."

"Maybe it's a defense mechanism," he suggests. "Like a falling person grabbing at branches and things to stop it's descent."

Since it's the end of the universe.

Maria laughs a little. "S'pose it could be anything. But it's just weird, seeing as she's married to James Bond."

Maria pauses, because she can't remember if Clyde has educated Luke on James Bond yet.

But then she continues, "And since she's really young, and it's a different universe, she doesn't know anything about us, so it's like meeting her all over again."

He hasn't. Not yet.

"Is that... good?"

She thinks about this seriously for a moment. It rather disturbed her for a little while, actually.

"I don't think it's really...good or bad. Sort of neutral, just like this place is. Milliways is almost like...limbo."

Maria takes a sip of her hot cocoa. "Oh, time completely stops outside of Milliways, so we could be here for days and no one in our world would know we've been gone."

"It might be a spatio-temporal pocket," he says, slowly working things out. "Like stepping sideways out of time and then back again. Nothing would've changed because its in between time."

:D?

"Luke," Maria starts, half-sighing and giggling. "Never mind. You could have a point there."

She looks at her mug again. "Anyway, did you want something to eat or drink? You can get anything, apparently."

"Tea," he says. That is not, in itself, a particularly interesting conversation point. "But how would we pay for it? I don't have any money."

Maria grows quiet all of a sudden. People here had encouraged her to eat and drink, and she didn't stop to think about...payment.

"I'm not sure. Maybe there's a tab?"

Maria ducks her head now. "Oh, great, I'm like a common criminal now, skipping out on payment."

"Wouldn't someone have told you already if you weren't paying?"

He considers the problem. "Couldn't you ask someone about a tab?"
