Happy Hour

Aug 27, 2007 20:27

George has spent the last few days looking up interesting new drink recipes.

He has selected a few of them to share with the Bar patrons this evening.

"Tonight's specials are: Cable Car, Caesar, Canadian Cherry and Cantaloupe Dizzy."

Maybe there's something that will strike your fancy?

"What'll it be?"

There was a slightly impish grin waiting for him, when the person before her took their drink and dashed off to where ever those who get drinks and dash go.

"Did you run out of C's?"

He grins at her.

"Run out of C's? Never. For you see m'lady, the seas are quite bountiful."

Ok. So it was something of a weak joke. But she's put him on the spot, hasn't she?

Marian laughed softly. It had at least been quick for a response.

"I think tea tonight." A glance to the board, she added lightly after a second. "Something the has a 'D' in name of the flavor, so the one is not so alone."

"Darjeeling will do?" he asks, chuckling.

She grinned. "Has a sort of oriental name to it. I think that should do just fine."

"Aye aye." he says, busying himself with getting her tea.

"I'm quite partial to it myself."

"We don't get many oriental things back home," Marian said taking a seat while she waited. "Travel takes a long time because I'm from a much earlier time than most people who come here. It's always rare and different to have them there."

He nods. It's something he understands.

"There are so many things that don't exist where I come from, that can be found here. Electricity, computers, coca cola, coffee..." he laughs. "All manner of books and information. Medicine that would make my mother - she's a healer - weep with joy for all the lives that she could save."

He passes her a cup of tea.

"Milk and sugar?"

"I don't know most of those things either. I recently found out about computers, and traveled inside one, but i don't right understand them greatly more than I did when I knew nothing."

Taking the cup, she gave him a smile. "Thank you. That would be lovely. Your mother is a healer?"

"Aye, she's a healer and a damn good one. She's saved many a life of those who come from the lower city - those that couldn't afford a healer of their own, like the nobles can. She's saved several of my friends over the years and certainly she's patched me up from time to time..."

There is definite warmth in his voice whenever he speaks of his mother.

"She sounds rather amazing," Marian admitted. She was quite fond of mother stories, which was probably due to her past and her exceeding lack thereof.

He smiles.

"I think so. She raised me - all on her own - a remarkable thing for a woman to do where I come from. It is something I think you'd understand, coming from a time and place as you do."

Marian nodded, giving him a quite understanding smile.

"More than that, too. If a little different for the circumstance of the parents. I was raised by my father only. But, yes, I do understand completely."

"Would you tell me of your father?" he asks, curiously.

"My father," she said the words softly, part reverence and prayer in that tone. No loss of respect for him, even now.

"He was my childhood knight in shining armor. There was no wrong he could not right. For myself and for our entire shire, as he was the last good sheriff of Nottingham." There is a ripple in that pause, that speaks of what must have replaced but she went on.

"He allowed me to be tutored far beyond that of normal girls, and then, forsaking even law, he taught me to defend myself, with his weapons. He taught me to prize the power and the knowledge and the equality of all people."

If not stopped, she might well go on for a while.

George nods.

"He sounds like quite the man." he says, encouraging her to continue.
