Melou isn't sitting too far away at the bar itself and raises and eyebrow when he overhears this. Yes, he shamelessly eavesdrops when it suits him.

"Wild horses take a lot of work. Sometimes, more than they're worth" he offers casually.

"This one was a gift to my father," says Hektor, turning to see who has spoken. "From the lord of a people many months' travel away. Father says I have a month and if the horse isn't tamer by then, he is going to sacrifice him to Poseidon whether he has bred any of the mares or no."

"You have a month to tame a horse that's already killed three men?" That's asking a whole hell of a lot, as far as Melou's concernced and frankly, he's beginning to wonder what this kid's father's motives really are. But it's probably best not to express that out loud.

"Well, you've got bribery or torture. If you want it to actually like you afterward, bribery's probably best."

"Well- Father says as long as it's brought to bear; I suppose he'll settle for being able to lead the beast to the breeding pens without five men to hold down his halter-rope," says Hektor. "And one of the dead was the sort of man that neither horses nor dogs like, not even the gentlest ones, so I don't think he counts. I think some of it is that our city must smell very different from where he comes from, which would put anyone on edge- but bribing him is probably good, it seems to work with dogs..."
