This is it. This is the day she has been looking forward to for years. The day she starts her surgical internship at Seattle Grace Hospital under the esteemed Dr. Burke. She is pretty sure she's prepared adequately for the day - she's reviewed all of her notes concerning common procedures, memorized the map of Seattle Grace, arrived an hour ( Read more... )

And there's Zuko, slinking by it.

Oh-- crap. The gape-faced vacancy of a new arrival.

"Hey. You okay?" says the maimed boy, who looks like he's got a hella case of the flu. "You're -- new. You have the stunned look. Sit down before you fall down, okay?"

"I'm fine." She assures automatically - she's always fine, always the reliable one with the answers - even as she automatically mentally triages the boy. Massive facial scarring - most likely burn trauma by the look of it, third degree from the extensive nature of the angry fibrous tissue, but old... whoever was in charge of his case ought to be taken out and shot, it doesn't look like they made any attempt at cosmetic reconstruction. Functionality of the eye involved questionable. Looks like he is febrile, possibly dehydrated, possibly congested, possibly hypoglycemic...

"Shouldn't you be sitting down?" She bluntly asks, and four years of classes concerning patient relations go straight out the window.

To the keen doctor, it was obvious that the eye lacked movement up or down, though he had some side to side, though not as much.. It didn't move properly as Zuko looked at her. The scartissue went all the way back across his heaed, and the ruined stub of an ear could be seen less clearly then it's perfectly formed mate on the other side.

"No," he says. "You are the stranger to Milliways, and I just became your host. Sort of." Zuko waves a hand, and he says, "And I'm fine, if you're worried. Really."

He smiles, a little, and then says, "You've never been here before."

Well, now that he turns his head like that, the extent of the trauma is much clearer. She updates her running tally to include a possible unilateral aural deficiency, but that would depend on how extensive the burn extended into the ear canal, if the tympanic membrane was damaged at all, if the cochlear nerve is still intact - he seems to balance well, ruling out obvious damage to the vestibular nerve on that side, which is encouraging. As for his eye, one would expect that the muscularis rectus lateralis would be damaged with that sort of a burn pattern, but he doesn't have an obvious orbital deviation medially, suggesting the muscle is still somewhat functional. Christina has to work hard to resist the urge to pull out her penlight and do a quick exam right now.

"No. This would be the first time, yeah. So... where are we, exactly? I don't remember this from the map, you see."

Mary would like to state, for the record, that she is not tragically deformed.

She just looks rather like she's looking for someone, in a fairly determined fashion. But when her gaze falls on the woman, she pauses.

Her eyes are funny.

Christina does not do children. If she did children, she would have signed up for pediatrics. But she doesn't do children. They are small and messy and unreasonable.

And her eyes are not funny.

Christina ignores the staring, nondeformed child as she tries to work out just where she is from her (perfect) memory of Seattle Grace's layout.

Her eyes are awfully funny.

Mary has only seen eyes like that once before, and that was when they were in Japan with Anthy - but she was mostly too busy gleeing to Dickon over the fact that they were in Japan to notice much, which means she didn't get much opportunity to study them.

She's making up for it now.

With lots of staring.

Her eyes are very normal, thank you very much. The little blond girl is rude, however. There's only how much staring she's willing to put up with.

"Don't you have a doll to go play with." She finally asks when the staring goes on for longer than she can ignore... which isn't that very long, actually.
