But she can at least do this: she waves her hands and apple blossoms rain down. She laughs in delight.

Jack just grins. "That's my girl."

He grabs at the blossoms and tosses them up again.

Lookit what I can do!

He sucks his cheeks in, making fish-faces, and his eyes swirl in a spiral of colours.

Not a bad idea at all. It'll be fun! Really!

He swoops back to the fireplace and returns with a burning ember, offering it to Georgia.

Pretty! Georgia makes grabby hands but before she can take it Jack intercedes. "Oh, no, love! Hot!"

"Can't I just be happy?" He chuckles. "I saw Sara this afternoon--she is doing very well and there seem to be no long-term ill effects. And Ecklie has decided that, due to mitigating circumstances, he will leave my shift alone. I suppose I am pleased about that."

Another kiss to Jack's temple. "But I'm even more pleased to be here."
