Characters: Kate Bishop/Kara Zor-El
Rating: G
Words: 542
Prompt: Other: Crossover
Summary: Kara was used to protecting Kate, not the other way around.
"Get. Away. From her."
Kate gritted her teeth, keeping her fingers taut on the bowstring as the large, clanging metallic monster with the evil green stone in his chest inched ever closer.
"Kate...?" Kara said weakly from the ground. "Don't...run while you can. He's..."
"Going down. That's what he's doing." Kate growled. "You hear me, bastard? You come any closer, and - "
The next few seconds seemed to take an eternity. Metallo charged, and Kate let go of her perfectly aimed shot. The arrow shattered Metallo's Kryptonite heart exactly half a second after he hit Kate with a brutal punch, sending her flying into the nearby building. Metallo short-circuited, and Kara quickly rolled away from the Kryptonite, towards where Kate was lying unconscious and still.
"Kate!" Kara quickly used her heat vision to scan Kate's body. Her heart was beating, she was breathing, and there didn't seem to be any bleeding on her brain. But there was a nasty cut on her scalp, and what looked like a closed fracture of her right tibia from where her leg had slammed into the brick wall. She'd live, but she had to get her to the hospital - fast.
-----
Martha Kent had opened her home to a lot of children over the years and loved them all, but something about the mysterious raven-haired girl who claimed to be from another world had really touched her. So as she listened to Kara softly cry in the waiting room chair next to her, she said a silent prayer to her maker that he was looking out for Kate this day.
"It shouldn't have happened. I'm faster. I'm stronger. I should have protected her."
"Kara, you know Kate. When someone she cares about is in danger, nothing's going to stop her. She never would have been able to forgive herself if anything happened to you."
"And how am I supposed to? I'm Supergirl, and I can't even protect my girlfriend from my villains!"
"She'll be fine. You did very well, getting her to the hospital so quickly. She's in good hands."
Kara nodded, and within minutes, a doctor in a white coat came out to talk to them.
"Ms. Kent? She's doing fine. We set the fracture and stitched up the gash. There weren't any complications, so you - "
The doctor was interrupted by a blur of blue as Kara sped past him into the rooms behind.
----
Kate's head felt like a jackhammer was going off in it, but at least it was a welcome distraction from the pain in her leg. As the anesthesia wore off and her vision cleared, she could make out Kara's worried face.
"I'm so sorry."
"...For what?"
"For not being able to protect you! Metallo's my bad guy, and I let him take me by surprise. You had to protect me, and you got hurt."
Kate reached out and stroked Kara's cheek. "Kara...I might not have powers, but we're the same. We'd both do anything to protect people. Especially each other. I'll be fine. And I'd never be able to live with myself if I didn't do everything I could do protect you."
Kara leaned in and softly kissed Kate on the lips. "I'll cover you."
"..Always."
