Author's Notes: Written for
pervyficgirl, for her request of "Bucky/Kate, hopeful" in my
Mood Challenge. Contains a relationship between a 21-year-old guy and a 16-year-old girl, but there's no sexual content beyond a few kisses.
"C'mon. Let me see you."
"I don't know..." Bucky muttered from behind the door. "I don't think I fill it out like he did."
"I'll be the judge of that." Kate grinned. "Come on! This is a huge moment! I want to share it with you!"
"Okay, here goes..."
Bucky opened the door and stepped out wearing the new Captain America uniform SHIELD had provided for him.
"Wow. I'm dating Captain America. This is kind of unreal."
Bucky sat down on the side of Kate's bed. "Yeah, and that's just another thing I need to hope doesn't get out. Captain America's dating a Young Avenger, and used to be a brainwashed Soviet assassin! That'll go over great. What was Steve thinking when he left me this?"
"I think he was thinking the same thing I am." Kate said as she sat next to Bucky, wrapping her arms around him. "That you beat yourself up way too much over things you had no control over, and that you're going to make a great hero."
"I don't know. Steve was...he wasn't just a hero. Somehow, he managed to bring out the best in everyone, even people most of us would give up on. He was an icon. A symbol of hope. I'm just a kid who was lucky enough to be helping him out. How am I supposed to follow that up?"
"I met Steve a few times. I didn't know him like you did, of course, but when the YA were training with him...he never seemed like he thought of himself as an icon. How old was he when he became Cap?"
"Like twenty or so. He wasn't that much older than me when we were in the war. That's always kind of strange to think about." Bucky shook his head. "He was my mentor, my inspiration. But if things had gone differently, if we weren't in the war, he might have just been the cool upperclassman I looked up to or something."
"And I'm betting he was just as freaked out when he started out as you are now. You're going to be great. He trusted you to do this. You were there from the beginning, and it's kind of fitting that you carry on the legacy."
"What was it like for you? You took on Hawkeye's name when he was dead. Did you ever feel like you could live up to his example?"
"Oh, no." Kate laughed. "I didn't even call myself that for the longest time. I never really felt confident with it until he came back and gave it to me. But Steve chose you. He had faith in you. And so do I."
Bucky leaned in and softly kissed Kate on the lips. "I'll try to do you both proud. I don't know if I'll ever really feel like this shield belongs to me, but the least I can do is try."
"Go and save the world. I'll see you out there, and any time you need a rest from the chaos...you know I'm right here." Kate traced her finger over Bucky's armor-clad chest until her finger came to rest on his lips. "This...us...it can be our little secret. I'm really glad I get to share this with you."
"I am too." Bucky kissed Kate again before getting up to begin his first patrol. "Thanks for everything."
"Captain America and Hawkeye...seems to be a pattern, huh?" Kate said with an impish gleam in her eye.
"Wait, what?"
"Tell you all about it later, Buck. There's a world to be saved." Kate grinned. As Bucky jumped out the window, Kate slipped on her mask and bow. This was her boyfriend's big day, and she wasn't going to miss seeing him in action for the first time.
