Bucky didn't like coming to Gotham, but sometimes Captain America was needed there. Everything had gone to hell once Batman went missing, and all the worst elements of the criminal underworld were pouring in, looking to claim their own little piece of the pie. That included the Aryan Front, a metahuman Neo-Nazi gang he had been dealing with in New York for months now. He'd be damned if they were going to start spreading their terror in another city. This warehouse he had been staking out seemed to be a dead end, though.
Suddenly, there was a whizzing noise as what looked like a small boomerang shot into the ground next to him. Bucky looked at it, and saw it was in the shape of a bat. All of a sudden, a red light started flashing in its center, and it began beeping loudly. Bucky dove out of the way just as it exploded, blowing him clear across the roof.
"Ha ha ha! You are as good as they said! Nice moves!" a voice yelled from the shadows, laughing. As the smoke cleared, the familiar figure of Batman became clearer.
"You're NOT Batman." Bucky glared.
"And you're not Cap." Jason grinned under the cowl. "There was a battle. My bros and I fought it out for the old man's mask, and I came out on top. You ask me, none of them really wanted it. I, on the other hand, have been waiting my whole second life for this."
"You think Bats would want you to try to kill fellow heroes while they're hunting neo-nazi gangs?"
"Please. If I wanted to kill you, you'd know it. Besides, that gang is down in that warehouse. They're just missing their heads. You're welcome."
"You killed them?"
"Like that gun of yours is for looks. I just had a little more fun with it. Maybe it'll send a message to their kind that they're not welcome in my city."
"My city. You sound just like the old man." Bucky smirked. "So, why attack me, then?"
"They went down easy. I was bored." Jason grinned, looking like a wild animal that just sighted prey. "I felt like taking on a bigger challenge."
Jason swung at Bucky, clipping the back of his head. Bucky rolled out of the way as Jason threw several batarangs at him. With one well-timed toss of his shield, he hit Jason in the gut, knocking him to the ground, and leapt on top of him.
Jason groaned. Even through the Kevlar of the new bat-suit, that shield hurt like hell. "So, you got me...'Cap". You know if you lock me up, I'm just going to be out tomorrow, right?"
"I'm not locking you up. Hell, I'm probably more wanted than you." Bucky paused. "If I let you up, am I going to regret it?"
"Nah, got it out of my system."
Bucky let Jason up, and backed away, just in case the young man in the bat-suit was lying. After Jason didn't make a move, he opened his satchel and pulled out two bottles of beer, tossing one to Jason.
"Huh, didn't expect that."
"Steve would have run you in." Bucky grinned. "I've always been a fan of other methods."
Jason sat down at the edge of the rooftop and cracked open the can. "Drinking on the job. Bats would roll over in his grave."
"So...how'd he die? I mean, it's not like it made the news. He was just gone one day."
Jason shook his head. "I don't even know. It went down during that whole thing when the skies went red. The rumors are he went down fighting a dark God. That'd be just like him. A normal human death wasn't enough for the man."
"I know you two had a...tense relationship."
"If you call trying to kill his entire rogues gallery, and him not knowing how to take a gift 'tense', I guess so."
"If you'd asked me, I'd have said Batman and Captain America were too tough to die. It just didn't seem possible" Bucky sighed. "I was so afraid to come out of the shadows, after Steve rescued me from the mind control. By the time I did, it was too late."
"Yeah, well..." Jason took another sip of beer. "Here's to carrying on for the lost. Even if not all of us would be the first choice."
Bucky looked down at the warehouse. "So, you really killed all of them, huh?"
"All but one. There was this girl. She looked like it was her first day with the group. They were giving her initiation details. I killed the leader right in front of her and told her to get out, or she'd be next." Jason tossed the beer can off the rooftop. "Seemed like the thing to do. I mean, I'm here because a Batman decided to give me a second chance. Might as well return the favor."
"Heh. I don't know if the old man would think you're such a bad choice after all."
"Stop sweet-talking me, Cap Jr. You'd think you were trying to get into my pants."
"Yeah, well..." Bucky grinned. "If you ever stop by New York, give me the heads-up. I know all the best ways to stay under the radar."
"Yeah, I might just do that."
Bucky leapt off the rooftop to check on the damage at the gang hideout. Jason smirked under the cowl as he watched the new Captain America disappear from sight. Of all the fights he had picked out of boredom, this had to be the best.
