Summary: Kara and Cassie deal with a busy morning, a bad case of Kryptonite Flu, and life in general.
Author's Notes/Warnings: AU from Teen Titans #55. Cassie and Kara are back together, that's all you need to know. Written for the
10_hurt_comfort prompt table. This is a direct sequel to
The Gods Must Be Crazy, set about 13 years later. This was originally slated to be the last in the series of ten fics, but then I decided to go in a different direction with some of the other prompts, so this got written early!
Cassie woke as the sun peeked through the drapes. She looked at the sleeping figure next to her. God, Kara was still as beautiful as the day they met. Kryptonian genes were a wonderful thing. She still looked good for almost 30, but Kara could easily still pass for a college student. She leaned over and softly kissed Kara's hair as the sleeping figure moaned softly.
"Morning, babe. Feeling any better?"
"Ngh." Kara grabbed the blankets and rolled over. It had been three days since Kara had taken a whiff of Poison Ivy's Kryptonite-infused pollen dust, and after a thorough examination, Dr. Midnite determined that she had...the flu. Or at least something very close to it. Nothing life threatening, but still not a pleasant experience for someone who had never been sick a day in her life.
"Are you feeling up to eating anything today? Maybe some crackers?"
"Ugh. Just the thought of food makes me feel like I'm going to expel my digestive tract out my nose." Kara buried her face in her pillow. "How do humans actually deal with this on a regular basis?
"Pretty much the same way as you. Lots of complaining, lots of TLC from the wife, and waiting it out. I wish I could stay here with you, but I should probably get Kessily up for - "
There was a loud scream from Kessily Sandsmark's room. Cassie sprung out of bed, and even Kara groggily rose from her half-sleep at the sound. There was a blur in the room as their 12-year old daughter appeared in front of them at super-speed."
"Moms! You didn't set the alarm! I've got band practice this morning!"
Cassie looked at her calendar. "No! Band practice is Thursday, right? It's Wednesday!"
"That's because you forgot to rip off yesterday's page! Mr. Mahoney's going to throw a fit if I'm late!"
Cassie looked at the calendar. Yep, apparently it had been Wednesday two days in a row until now. "Oh, Hera. I'm sorry, honey. With Kara being so sick, and work being crazy, I just completely forgot."
Kessily paced around the room at super-speed. "That's okay! I packed my lunch last night, I've got my backpack, but I still need someone to drive me, and fast! Unless you just want me to fly to school!"
Cassie held up her hand. "No, showing up at school flying is bad. I'll take you in a minute. You remember what you're doing after school today?"
Kessily thought for a second. "Uncle Clark is picking me up from school for hero training at the fortress. Then I'm going to go hang out with Shiela at the Todd's place until six, when you pick me up."
"Good girl. And if you run into any trouble in Gotham?"
"I try to get away, yell for help, and if that doesn't work, then I can heat vision him into the burn ward." Kessily smirked.
Cassie ruffled her daughter's hair. Kessily looked over at her sick mother in the bed. "Um...is Mom okay?"
"She'll be fine, honey. She's just fighting it off."
Kara weakly poked her head out of the covers. "Tell my cousin that I think today's the day you kick his butt at Fortress tag."
"Will do. Bye, mom!"
As Kessily ran down to the car, Cassie sat down at the foot of the bed. "I hate leaving you."
"It's fine. We've got to get our kid to school."
"You know I'll be right back. And then I'm calling into the museum and taking a personal day."
"You don't have to do that, Cassie. I'll be fine. Seriously."
"Of course I do, K. There's nothing more important to me than making sure you've got someone here while you fight this thing. One vacation day's nothing compared to that."
There was a loud honking from the car downstairs. Cassie glared at the window. "That's your hyper streak she's got, you know."
Kara laughed weakly. "Yeah, well, she's got your stubbornness."
Cassie leaned over and softly kissed Kara on the lips.
"Ugh. Don't. I don't want you to get this."
Cassie laughed. "I seriously doubt I can get Kryptonite-related illnesses. I'll be back soon, okay?"
"Sure. Love you, wife."
"Love you right back, wife."
Cassie ran out the door, and Kara could hear her yell at Kessily to stop the honking. Kara snuggled back under the covers, secure in the feeling that there was no flu strong enough to scare Cassie away.
