...much better than last year! Actually, I shouldn't say that. Last year was fabulous right up until the time my son shot himself in the foot with a .22 pistol while plinking with a friend. I'm still not totally convinced he didn't do it on purpose, even subconsciously. But my money situation is still precarious since then, due to the medical bills (along with the other expenses he's incurred for me, such as a cell phone with an expensive 2-year contract which he managed to screw up royally, and his car situation). But a new year is coming and I have hope that equilibrium will be restored. I've had a great time in a neighboring state, getting reacquainted with the in-laws. Lots of potential for chaos, but none has materialized. We go home tomorrow after a bit of shopping today.
Yeah, it's a good weekend. Something to be grateful for, all in itself.
Later: 8:30pm
Welcome back to JinxWatch, Thanksgiving Edition! Last Thanksgiving was so hideously bad, I'm kind of waiting for things to go bad this time around.
So far (knocking self on head), all is well. Just cold and the room I'm in is filled with stale cigarette smoke, but... It's been fun. My wonderful brother-in-law finally got DSL! Yippee!
Last night I watched Grey's Anatomy with my 2 SIL's. It was the one where Seth Green is the endearing patient with the exposed carotid artery, and... well, if you didn't see the ending, I won't spoil it for you. Suffice it to say, the ending certainly woke us up from our post-Turkey stupor. We needed an antidote for it, so we watched March of the Penguins. We all liked that. Of course, one of the ladies insisted on putting a highly religious slant on the footage...
Went to bed about an hour and a half after my H. I lifted the blanket and woke him; he started complaining. He was wearing all his clothes; complained it was cold and he wanted to go home. Obviously mostly asleep :)
I put my arms around him; said he should just pretend we were camping and go to sleep. He did; it was too hot for me, so I turned over and we stayed cheek-to-cheek for the rest of the night. Got up pretty early, had breakfast, went over to Ray's to pick something up. He and his lady have a nice little house. Everybody agrees, the furniture is simply too big for most of the rooms and they have too much stuff, but that's what happens when 2 adults who have lived full lives move in together. They bring all their stuff.
I said something tactless and feel bad (but Ray isn't one to get offended...). We were in his kitchen, and my husband said "I like this kitchen - there's a lot more room than in ours." Well, that's ridiculous, but without thinking he was just trying to be polite, I said "No way - we have more counter space and everything's laid out a lot more intelligently." Brilliant, eh? Suddenly I realized how horrible that sounded, so I covered it up, or tried to, by saying "Wow, I can't believe I'm actually satisfied with something I have instead of envying somebody else -- I must be growing up." I'm hoping that will smooth things over. See, Ray doesn't get offended, but I'm not sure about his mother, who was standing there in the kitchen. I'll have to e-mail her with an apology.
After leaving Ray's, I drove us way the hell out of the way, convinced I knew where we were going. It didn't cause any trouble, and my H didn't bitch about it, and we got to Billy's at a very reasonable hour. We accomplished our mission, which was to save Billy from starvation. His disability check won't come in for several more days, and his refrigerator was like Echo Canyon. We made the rounds of Sam's Wal-mart and Dollar Tree and got him nicely stocked up. He didn't want to put anything in the shopping cart, so i started grabbing things off the shelves and just putting them in. I came over with some pickles and other stuff; he said "Oh, quit buying me things!" I said "These aren't for you! Get away!" and made a show of pulling the food away so he couldn't touch it. We didn't spend much at all; it was very reasonable, just enough to get him through the next couple of weeks. He got DSL! I'm so happy, both for him and for me.
Now we're watching the movie Michael and getting ready to eat a hot dog dinner. It's still cold.
