When I fall

"You and Angel?" Familiar green eyes below a raised eyebrow, and I knew exactly who was in the room with us. It was her. Never went very far without her, ya know? Sure you could stab one of us or have one of us jump off a big ass tower to save a sister that wasn't real, but we always found eachother. "Like I didn't see that one coming." She was ( Read more... )

I listened in the darkness, as my eyes scanned the row of lockers lining both sides of the hallway. Suddenly I heard something move and turned just a minute too slow as some nasty slimy thing slammed Angel against the wall. Angel slammed his fist into the demon's head, sending it staggering back towards me. Grabbing it by it's wicked nasty and slimy shoulder I spun it around quickly and flung it to the ground. Instantly my boot stomped down on it's throat, breaking it's neck and rendering it....well, pretty much dead.

"Damn." I said with a shrug as I turned back to Angel who was rubbing some slime off of his coat. He seriously was such a queen sometimes, and it made me roll my eyes in mild amusement.

Suddenly I looked up as I heard a scrape along the wall.

"Did you hear that?" I barely breathed out before more slimy critters started crawling out of the fucking woodwork. After a minute or so I had my back pressed against Angel's, falling into an automatic defensive position as we were surrounded by demons. A slow sadistic smirk crept across dark stained lips as I looked around. "This is gonna be wicked fun." I said, just before we both sprung into action.

It was a whirlwind of fists and fury, and as I was snapping necks and breaking bones I'd occasionally glance over at Angel who was full out vamp mode rippin' heads clean off their bodies. Boy had some rage to work out and I didn't blame him. No stranger to rage and I was pretty sure that both of us had been in a serious need for a good knock down drag out.

When we'd killed at least half the monsters the floor suddenly shifted under my weight. Instantly I stopped what I was doing and looked down just in time to see the floor crack and cave under our weight. Me, Angel, the demons- whole kitten caboodle went crashing through the floor and the next thing I knew my back was hitting a concrete basement floor hard.

With a groan I tried to wave away some of the dust clouding my vision as I sat up. Narrowing my eyes I watched as all the demons suddenly shrieked and started skittering back up the wall to the floor above us again, leavin' me and Angel alone in the basement.

"Fuck," I cursed as I landed on my stomach. Rolling on my side, I watched as they all went back up, leaving Faith and I alone. That was ...strange, but it was a good fight. Something that I've needed besides other things. Sitting up, I moved over to Faith, then we both stood up, looking around. "Think there's something down here that even they're afraid of. Or it could be nothing. We should check it out," I said and I saw the look that Faith gave me, but didn't say anything.

We walked down the hall and I felt something among the walls as we passed. We were being watched, but by who? Or what for that matter.

"You feeling anything, Faith?" I asked as I walked, making sure not to trip over anything. "I feel something, I just can't place it," I whispered.

Standing up next to Angel, I tilted my chin up watching all the demons quickly run out of sight. "They're scared, or they were just supposed to protect something." Narrowing my eyes I looked back towards the dim basement. Why did I always end up in school basements? Like some kinda bad horror movie or something. Could be worse I guessed. Could be crazy in the basement like Spike.

As we walked down the hallway, a creepy feeling that made my spine tingle began to settle over my skin. Like we were bein' watched for sure...but weren't we always? I mean, something was always watchin' us. Powers that can suck it for all I care. Not like they ever did me any little bit of good.

"Yeah there's something up." We reached a door and I opened it with one easy jerk only to find a gaping hole in the floor. Lookin' back at Angel with a raised eyebrow I walked to the edge of the pit and looked straight down into nothingness. Man, was anyone else feelin' the de ja vous here? But this wasn't the pit of a hellmouth stuffed with ubervamps, it was something else completely.

"I don't even wanna know what crawled outta there."

"I don't want to know either, but I think we're going to have to ..." What? Jump in there? Shouldn't we come back with weapons? It's not like they're really hurting anything, everyone else on earth is dead. For the most part. I glanced over at Faith to get her reaction on it, but she was just peering down the hole, probably wondering what to do.

"Look, how about we come back tomorrow night when we have the whole night. Maybe we can find something on Wesley's ... computer." I frowned when I said that. Not only was I using his apartment, I was now using his computer ... and next would be his books and he's not here to tell me hands off like he usually was.

"Anyway, um, so yeah, we should do that. Look at books, find out what this is, maybe do a search with the description of what we just fought before we came down here. Maybe it leads to something bigger. I'd rather know about that before I go and jump in any holes."

Unless Faith just wanted to go in now, then well, I'd have to too.

I peered down into the dark hole, tryin' to squint in the dark. Couldn't see the bottom, it was so damn dark down there. Taking my lighter out of my pocket I flicked it so the flame shone down the hole, but still couldn't see anything. Wait. Soul Boy could see in the dark, couldn't he? Maybe he could take a peek and tell me what was down there.

Turning my head I raised an eyebrow in his direction. "Books?" I asked stupidly. Were we book people? Well I wasn't a book person, and yeah sometimes I caught Angel reading some books but I didn't think he was really a book person vampire either. We were beings of action, not words and research. Words only got you so far, and now that there was hardly anyone around to speak them they didn't get anyone very far at all. Besides, what did either of us possibly have to lose at this point?

"Look." I looked up towards the ceiling of the basement before turnin' back to Angel. "We're inside, so even if the sun does come up it's not like you're gonna get fried. We'll just chill in here til it goes down again. Besides, aren't you curious about what's down there?"

She did have a point. I saw how she looked at me about the book thing. We're not really book people. That's what Wes is ...was for and now he's gone. "Right," I said with a nod.

Walking closer, I peered down the hole and all I got was dirt. It wasn't that deep, for us anyway. Normal people would have broken bones jumping down there. And, if we got stuck because of daylight, we'd just wait, it wouldn't be a big deal besides those slimy demons that attacked us, even though they were too easy to kill.

"Yeah, I am slightly curious. Want me to go down there first?" I asked her and looked at her. She gave me a look and jumped down and I sighed unneededly before jumping down also, following her.

Landing on my feet, I looked around and saw her getting up. "Nice jump," I muttered and walked over to her. "Next time could you at least give me warning?"

The minute he said he was slightly curious I made the leap. No doubt in my pretty little head that he'd follow suit. Landing hard on my feet, it was almost enough to knock the wind out of me. Hadn't expect it to be that long of a drop. But it was no big deal for a badass slayer like myself and the vampire that landed next to me. Course I hadn't really thought of how we'd get back up or anything. Life was no fun if there wasn't an adventure involved.

"Where's the fun in that?" I asked with a smirk, grabbing onto his arm because the second problem was startin' to hit me. It was pitch fucking black down there. I couldn't see a goddamn thing. Lucky for me, Angel could see in the dark.

With my free hand I dug around in my pocket and got my lighter out again. Flicking it once, the cavern we were in lit up in an eerie dim glow.

"Whoa." I let a low whistle escape my lips as I walked over towards one of the stone walls. There was writing carved deep within the grey stone, but I couldn't read it. Some other kinda language. It was everywhere though, coverin' up the whole damn room. "What is this?"

Placing my hand on the small of her back, I led her for a couple of steps before she stopped, looking at the walls. I could already see them and before she started asking about it, I was trying to figure out what language it was. I couldn't place it, but it did look familiar.

"I don't know," I told her and stepped closer, raising my hand and pressing it against the stone. Pulling my hand back, I gave it another look.

"It has energy," I said, "The stones." Something was coming from the stones and the writing on it, reminded me of Fred. I didn't want to think about her, but I was now and then I thought about that if she was here, she'd know probably. Or Wes. We'd have to figure out the book stuff on our own.

"I've seen the writing before, but I can't place it. I'm trying to get the words together, or well, a word."

"Why am I gettin' the feelin' that those freaky slime guys upstairs were protecting something?" I asked, more to myself than Angel as he pressed his hand into the stone. With my lighter still lit in one hand I followed the words around the wall. Still couldn't make heads or tails of any of it. Looked like a bunch of gibberish and shit to me.

Walking to the far side of the room, I stopped puzzled at a stone that jut out of the wall just a little bit.

"Huh." I said under my breath as I pressed one hand against it. Barely put any pressure on it at all before it slid back into place and a loud whizzing sound began to fill the air. Instantly I snapped to attention and I could see Angel do the same thing. I walked over to him as one entire panel of the wall slid open. I could barely see what was over there, but immediately I could see the figure of a man emerge.

"Ooops." I shot Angel a look before the man stepped closer, and as soon as he entered some of the light I could see his eyes. They were pitch black.

"Oops?" I asked her and then snapped my attention to the demon/man looking thing that was hovering over us. Well, I think we found what the others were hiding apparently and it didn't look happy. Then again, his eyes were pitch black, so there was no emotion.

It started speaking, but I didn't even know what he was saying, but whatever he was saying, he was yelling it by now and stepping toward us. Faith and I split up, then jumped into action.

As I flew midair, the demon caught me in the chest and shoved me off of him. I went flying into the stone wall and down on the ground, face down. Got back up again and noticed the same thing happening with Faith.

Tried again, punching, kicking, anything I could do before I went flying through the air again, landing on my back. Rolling onto my side, I got up slowly and narrowed my eyes at the demon.

"Faith, we need to get out of here, we don't know what he's about and he's too strong."

It was so weird. How Angel and I both tensed up, I could feel it. There was a fight comin', and at the same time we both jumped into action. Unfortunately for me, when I got backhanded so hard I slammed into the wall I lost my lighter and we were plunged into darkness again. I couldn't see a fucking thing but I could hear. Mostly I could hear a lot of thumping and Angel groaning. Shit. Shit. Shit. I couldn't see anything.

Blindly I stumbled towards the sound and wound up hard. Sorry Angel if this hits you instead. My fist connected with what must have been a chest, and it definitely wasn't Angel's. Like fucking steel so hard that I shook my wrist because I really thought it was broken for a second. Where was Angel? I couldn't see anything.

Suddenly a crushing pressure of a hand like steel around my throat as I got lifted from the ground. Desperately I kicked out trying to ease the pressure and the pounding in my head. His grip was like steel and finally the pressure released as I found myself gettin' thrown all the way across the room and into the wall. Slumping over to the ground I coughed hard as I heard another groan from Angel and then a blur of motion brushed past me towards the opening in the ceiling.

The demon rushed past me, I thought it was running for me, but instead it jumped and then it was out. Running over to Faith, I checked her over and then looked at the opening.

"Trust me?" I asked and I didn't wait for her to answer. Lifting her up by her hips, I tossed her and I made sure that she actually made it out of the opening before jumping and making it out myself.

Helped her up and I looked around. It wasn't anywhere to be found, but we both knew it was around somewhere. We needed to get out of here anyway, we couldn't fight it, not now.

"Let's go."

Huh? I didn't even have time to answer Angel before he was hauling me up to my feet and then launching me up and over the opening. I crashed hard on the cement floor of the basement with a groan. Thanks Angel, like I hadn't already gotten thrown around enough tonight.

He jumped u after me and pulled me back to my feet again. My wrist was throbbing something wicked and for a minute I wondered if I really had broken it. Not like there was time to ponder that thought right then and there. Time to get the hell out of dodge real quick.

Angel pulled hard on my arm, half dragging me until I finally ripped myself out of his grip. Could keep up all on my own and easily. We ran all the way back up to the opening we'd fallen through. Angel looked at me again and started walkin' towards me.

"Oh no you don't!" I took a step away from him before springing upwards. Grabbing a pipe, I could feel the ache and grind of broken bones as I swung myself up and around til I was standin' on the floor. Surrounded by slime skittering weird things again. Oh great.

But they weren't payin' attention to me, at least not before my boots had made a solid thunk sound on the floor. Suddenly they all turned to face me, the guy with the black eyes standing at the front of the herd. Felt a shiver go down my spine as he locked his dark black gaze with mine.
