Borg RIP 1998-2006

May 16, 2006 08:58

Saturday morning I awoke to the sound of beeping. A beeping that I knew only too well, the beeping of a failed RAID array. Fortunately, it was a RAID 1, so I wasn't too worried. One drive down, the other drive was fine. I had to go to mom's for mother's day, so I shut Borg down and put a note up saying to leave him off until I got back.

I got back late on Sunday, so I didn't get a chance to work on him until Monday afternoon. I copied the essential data off of the machine I was using to image the jukebox hard drives, and stole its system drive to replace the bad drive in Borg. I open Borg up, and he's filled with dust. Dust bunnies have procreated as if there were no tomorrow. Maximum dust bunny population was achieved.

So, after I committed dust bunny genocide, I swapped out the bad drive for the good one, and tried to power the machine back up. I get fans, and I get the occasional click from the hard drive, but no video, and no video error beep code. I switch monitors, nothing. I switch video cards, nothing. I swap out the power supply with a known good one, nothing. It was then midnight, and I had to go to bed.

When I get home tonight, I'm going to try using a PCI video card (in case it's just the AGP slot), and maybe try pulling all the other cards out, but I don't hold out much hope. I think that maybe, finally, good old Borg has given up the ghost.

He will be missed.
