Misc Fandom Recs

Sep 18, 2006 17:30

I'm working on rec lists for the pairings I've read the most of, but I've got a few random fandom recs too, so I thought I'd gather those into one post. List will be added to as I work my way through my book marks :)

Pirates of the Carribean

Six Nights Out From Tortuga, by artaxastra
Rating: PG-13/soft-R
Pairing: Jack/Elizabeth
A/N: This one's a bit different. Geekturnedvamp wanted grimmer, and Jack's voice. Selenak wanted a not-fluffy Elizabeth. This is what might happen, past the end of the world.
Summary: "It's easy to descend to the Underworld. It's returning that's the trick." -- the Sibyl of Cumae, Virgil's Aeneid

The Very Secret Diary of Captain Jack Sparrow, by Gloria Mundi, Napoleon, and Ladymoonray

Captain Sparrow finds himself awash on a very strange shore. Absolutely hysterical PotC/LotR crossover. Arr.

Sherlock Holmes

Leaving, by Telanu somniesperus
A/N: A Holmes/Watson vignette, taking place a short while before “The Final Problem.”
Summary: Holmes and Mary have it out, Victorian style, and our hero realizes something painful.

Poor, poor Holmes. Not something one often finds oneself saying; usually it’s poor Watson. Perfectly portrayed cruelty and artifice as only a woman could write or fully understand. A wonderful exploration of Holmes’s feelings after Watson’s marriage to Mary that’s akin to having one’s heart dug out with an ice pick.

A Scarlet Man and A Scandal in Baker Street by Emily Veinglory
PG-13-soft R, Drama, Angst

Probably some of the best writing in the entire Holmes/Watson fandom. Watson’s characterization is an absolute kick in the gut - gentle, kind, mild-mannered as he always is, yet here he has infinitely more backbone than most people give him credit for, and there’s this deep, black undercurrent of anger and bitterness over Holmes that he keeps below the surface, threatening to surge free at any moment. It’s this aspect that impresses me most, as I haven’t seen Watson’s resentments adequately treated before in fandom. First and probably last time I’ll ever recommend a WIP.

Warm As My Blood, by pen_and_umbra NEW!
Rating: R
Summary: Neither Holmes' penchant for theatrics nor his capacity to surprise Watson should ever be underestimated.

Fuck. I'm at a total loss for words when it comes to pen_and_umbra. Just trust me that she's one of the best and most brilliant writers in any fandom she graces. Go and read everything by her - and I don't say that lightly, 'cause I'm a snob. But about this story, she's got the voices down admirably and a delightfully playful, exasperated dynamic between Holmes and Watson, but this isn't one of those stories that ignores the case at hand either. And her amazingly expansive vocabulary helps give the story just the right Victorian feel (who else could really use 'magniloquent'?). Wanky as this is to say, I think I enjoy her deft imitations of Doyle more than Doyle's own writing.

Requiem at Reichenbach, by Alixtii NEW!
Rating: PG-13
Summary: It is as if all the universe were set in motion as to conspire to bring us to this moment. Written For: Yuletide 2006

Holmes/Moriarty! How wonderful! It's a fascinating look from Moriarty's POV at how he may have created and shaped Holmes (the general fanon being that Moriarty was originally Holmes's mathematics tutor) and how their lives and fates are intertwined.

Mary Renault

Oromedon's Lessons:, by elfscribe5
Rating: a soft NC17
Pairing: Bagoas/Oromedon

Lovely and sensual, and the prose is very elegant and polished - it reads flawlessly and sounds incredibly like Renault.

The Colbert Report

The WØRD by Agnes Joseph
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Slash, written for yuletide 2006.

I hurt myself laughing at this brilliant imitation of a Colbert report. Funniest thing I've read in a long time.

Good Omens

Best Laid Plans by elgrey
Rating: R
Pairing: Crowley/Aziraphale (slash)
Summary: Crowley wants to seduce Aziraphale but Aziraphale has plans of his own that could have dangerous consequences.
