Race and Speculative Fiction
The more I read and see, the more I wish I could find the same sort of diversity in my entertainment as exists in my real life. That has taken some digging and I've had many disappointments, particularly with TV.
I've been thinking about it more because it's been a hot topic in 2 of my fandoms. Over the past year, to satisfy myself, I've turned to the written word. Lately, I've been drawn to essays and discussions about these issues. I have 2 recommendations:
Dark Matters, published in 2000, is subtitled "A Century of Speculative Fiction From the African Diaspora". I haven't read the stories yet, but I've been enjoying some of the essays, particularly Samuel Delany's tale of his experiences as a black sci fi author.
In December 2007, a relatively new online magazine, Fantasy Magazine started publishing a 3-part round table entited People of Color in Fantastic Literature.
In light of the above and to celebrate Nalo Hopkinson's status as a Nebula award finalist for her novel, The New Moon's Arms I finally got a copy of the book and plan on reading it and the short stories she contributed to Dark Matters.
