Hello, mik. Joe/Túrin here. Hope you don't mind me jumping into your lj uninvited.

I completely relate to your feelings about your grandparents, and I think it very mature of you to recognize just what they mean or should mean to us. My mom's mom is still alive, and my dad's mom was until I was 19. I agree, that generation definitely had a much more stoic attitude than ours does. My mom's mom is 82, and is like a second mother to me. We've had conversations, but there is still so much to learn.

Yet, when I speak to her, I get the impression that she made her peace a long time ago with whatever adversity she had in her life (which from what my mom says was alot), and now feels no need to talk about it. And maybe that's an attitude we all should ultimately aspire to.

Joe. Course I dont mind. If I knew that you had an LJ, I'dve added you a long time ago.

A mature attitude? Me? Naaah!

I know what you mean though about that generation being so tight-lipped. However, I remember getting my gran talking about pre-war times before for a school project and its amazing how free-flowing she became.

I wonder if its sad for them to talk about it. I know that even at 22, I still get nostalgic talking about by past...imagine if you had such a long past that you'd never recapture.

We really need to know so much more about these people.

Cool. As of today my lj has a total of three posts, and two were from many months ago. So it's not like you've missed much!
I'm rather terrible of keeping at these things.

I think some of us tend towards nostalgia and others don't. I'm definitely in the former camp, but I bet a lot of old people aren't. On the other hand, as people around you die off, I think it forces most to be reflective. But a lot of people don't like that.
