Some of you might recall that I was cajoled into entering the NZ Mr Leather contest last year, as they were short of contestants, and I got to be runner up.
On Saturday at Wellington airport, coming back from the Outgames, I had a beer with the owners of Urge, who told me the winner has pulled out, and as Runner Up... I am off to Melbourne in 3 weeks to represent New Zealand.
A part of me is very happy at the idea, another part is shit-scared. They are so much more organised than we were here. Here it was "Have another shot of Jaeger and get on stage" They have a much bigger programme. And you have to have access to a wide range of gear - there's a "Full Gear " section, a "Formal Leatherwear" section, a "Shorts and Chaps" section... luckily I can borrow from mates - I've always been a minimalist with my own gear. Leather pants, jacket, boots - that's always been enough for me.
I feel old, flabby, nearly 50, not hot enough etc - but they stress it's not a beauty contest - the questions seem to more about community and attitude, so I should do ok there.
Very strange what life can throw one, but I get to see mates in Melbourne, and it should be a lot of fun.
