Laissez les bon temps roulez!

It's Mardi Gras and I've been stuck in my cube all day with nary a parade in sight. I should be granted some sort of nation-wide exemption so I don't have to work on Mardi Gras, no matter where I live. When you are born into and grow up with that culture, it's in your blood, you know? Such a travesty, working today ( Read more... )

"In other news" is perfectly acceptable. It's what I say anyway. Yay for meeting new people!

Well the reason I asked is that I think I used "in other news" in another recent post I made, and I don't want to overuse the phrase. Now that I think about it, "by the by" could work, as could "Oh yeah!" and "Also."

"and"

I dunno, "in other news" and "by the by" both seem appropriately paradoxically-transitional (er...), but something as blase' as "and" doesn't.

...Right?

Yes, we are meeting! For real! I don't suppose you have a student ID? I'm going to the symphony Friday evening and student rush tickets are $5.

Ah, yes. The search for transitional phrases that aren't cliche. You know, I avoid cliches like the plague. I mean, why say something people have said since the dawn of time?

I've never experienced Mardi Gras. Never been to New Orleans, for that matter. I drove through Louisiana once on the way to Texas. I remember stopping at a gas station (LA, or was it Mississippi?) with a sign on the door that said "Minimum $2 purchase required to use restrooms." I thought that was pretty funny.

I might still have my old LSU student ID...think that'll work? Alas, I work from 10am-9pm on Fridays, so I wouldn't be able to make it anyway. Thanks for the invitation though!

In my first short story writing class in college, my teacher spent a lot of time focusing on cliches. Up until then I had only known about them, never realizing their disastrous effect on writing. After that I became a cliche-hunter, mercilessly circling and underlining any cliche I happened across in the stories of my peers; and of course I strive to hold myself to that same higher standard of writing excellence.

But like sveeb said, that was GOLD on your part. =)

Hrm, if the gas station had restrooms, you were probably in Louisiana. All research I've done indicates that Mississippi has unilaterally banned publicly-accessible restrooms at their gas stations. Louisiana's a nice place, you should definitely visit sometime.

GG regional holidays. When I lived in Vermont everybody celebrated MG but the well-below-freezing temperatures kept anyone from flashing at the parade.

However, nobody from the area knows about Cinco de Mayo. Never even heard of it.

Weird, Vermont has Mardi Gras? I know there are some French communities in Maine, but didn't know they were all over the NE...

Vermont has almost zero French culture. There are a lot of people and towns with French names but I don't think there was a single French restaurant in Burlington, which is the biggest town. Mardi Gras gets a parade because it's a college town.

There's also the local history of having fought against French Canada (Montreal is one hour away) so there's definitely some anti-France sentiment about. Ditto for New York.

Ah yes, college towns. Weird. Some of the French Canadians who were dispersed by the British (most of whom settled in Louisiana and became Cajuns) just crossed the border and settled in the northern reaches of Maine. I always thought they were the smarter ones, but hey, I'm glad for the culture the rest of them brought to Louisiana!

What's your icon from, by the way? It looks really familiar but I can't place it.
