Anybody got an apple?

I had my first day at my internship today. :) I'm working at an elementary school, helping to teach some of the students English as a Second Language.

I found out today that I'll be working with a variety of students. There's a fourth-grader fresh out of Korea, and he speaks absolutely no English. I'm really looking forward to working with him. I also have a group of three hispanic kids who have great speaking skills in English, but need help with their reading. There's another girl who is fresh out of Mexico, so she'll need help learning everything. I'll also be working with two of the kids in the special education classroom. One of them is a three-year old who speaks no English. There's another who will be arriving soon, and he speaks no English, either. These two deal with a learning disability, so I'll both be helping them to adjust into a new culture and school and helping them spring forward into English.

Today I worked with a class that is publishing a book of poetry. I helped edit their poetry and then I showed them how to put it together. Those fourth-graders are great poets! I enjoyed working with them.

I also worked with the reading group I mentioned before. Those kids are ornery! haha :). And they didn't know at first that I speak Spanish, so they were all talking to each other and saying some mean things to each other...and I caught them and told them I heard them in Spanish. It was funny. :)

I think I'm actually going to like this whole being-a-teacher thing. I hope. :)

On another note, I started classes yesterday (I only have class MWF). I can't wait to get into my regional issues in politics class. The first subject we're dealing with is politics in East Asia, particularly China. Woo hoo! :) And my professor is EXACTLY like Tim Conway! It's hysterical! :) One of my literature professors reminds me soooo much of Drew Barrymore (even in the way she speaks). :) The only class I don't think I'll like is trigonometry. I was lost in the first ten minutes of the lesson. I'm a senior English major who hasn't had a math class since freshman year--does that tell you anything? lol :)

Happy schooling and work-life-ing to all of you.

:)
