The humidity made me feel damp all over. I jumped into the river to cool off, but it didn't help much. The dark, murky salt water had absorbed the hot July sunlight, so it was less than refreshing. At least this gave me something to think about other than everything that had been going on at work and with my family. I tread water for a moment, and then kicked my feet up to float on my back. It is very easy to float on your back in water as salty as our river was. You just lie still, and you might even fall asleep. With my ears just beneath the surface, my breathing sounded very loud. I started to hum, because it feels funny to hum when your ears are under water. After while, nothing else mattered but floating and sunshine.
