More Ink

So I come crawling out of my hole for the first time in almost 10 months only to post more pictures of my tattoos. My ink from last May was only the beginning. In quick succession I added two more, one at the end of May less than 3 weeks after the music notes one, and then another one at the beginning of August. I then waited until the week of my birthday in late December to get the next one as a birthday present to myself and to say goodbye to 2010 (I got inked on December 31).

And here they are.

Pazyryk deer number one, left shoulder, late May. With bonus Darwin.

Pazyryk deer number two, right shoulder, early August, and I finally get some color!

The pair, complete at last

My birthday present to myself.

So what's the DEAL? Well, in 1996 I read an article in National Geographic about the Pazyryk culture of the Siberian steppes. Some time after that, the magazine printed a photo sent in by someone who had gotten a tattoo inspired by the tattooed mummies pictured in the article. I thought, "That is so cool," and stuck it into my "mental file" for the future. When I finally got serious about getting some of these tattoos, I went looking for online representations of the deer I remember from that long-ago article. I found not only the one I remembered from the article and subsequent photo, but another one that I found equally as beautiful and intriguing. It can be seen here, still visible on the skin of the mummified chieftain. I ended up getting that one first (Pazyryk deer number one) followed by the one tinged with red, which had been my original idea (Pazyryk deer number two). That one was found on the "Ice Maiden."

The raven tat is a replica of the Ravenswood Winery logo. It's not that I am in love with their wines, which are admittedly very good (although it must be said, too, that I have rarely met a wine I didn't like), it's because I love the stark simplicity of the design. I also love birds, and I thought it was time to get a bird-themed tattoo. I had that one stored in the mental file since 1998, which was the first time I saw a bottle of Ravenswood wine. The instant I saw it I knew I had to get a tattoo of the logo.

Now that I've mined my back catalog for all the ideas I had tucked away for ten years or more, I have to start coming up with new ones. Fortunately, I've already got the next one figured out and "on deck" for January 2012, when I will get inked to commemorate what would have been my grandmother's 100th birthday.
