The new Jem and the Holograms comic is one of the greatest things that has happened to my life in a long time.  Like, I was predisposed to admire it based on the promo artwork alone, but it is cute and fun and a really lovely update to what is - let's be honest - a 30-minute toy commercial with a typically wacky '80s premise.  There's a lotta love ( Read more... )

A couple of things happened in synchronicity for me: I went to New York City, and Garbage released a new album (Not Your Kind Of People, fantastic as usual, do go purchase it).  One of the songs is "Man On A Wire", supposedly inspired by Philippe Petit's 1974 tightrope walk between the Twin Towers - the "artistic crime of the century".

So you may or may not have heard of the movie John Carter, based on the 100-year-old (yes, really) Barsoom series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs.  You know, that writer guy who also came up with the story of some dude swinging around on jungle vines and yodeling for his bros.
