Normally, Friday nights are spent enjoying awful movies in with my wonderful friends in
fns. Even when I'm not feeling all that hot, I'm rarely home on Friday nights, and staying at home just feels weird. Last week I was not 100%, yet I showed up at the weekly gathering anyway, because I have to go out on Fridays. It's become an unbreakable habit. Last night was to be no exception, but on the way home I checked my cell phone, and noticed that JL had phoned. I returned the call, and found myself invited to a concert at the
Elbow Room in downtown Ypsi. On the bill Friday was
Captured! By Robots, an experience that hovers somewhere between geek and cool, and is an extraordinary sight to see.
C!BR is the sole creation of Jay Vance, AKA JBOT. He starting building his band mates about ten years ago, and he's been playing with them ever since. Each of the talking (yes, talking) robots have their own voices and personalities, controlled by a computer that's somewhere onstage. Each tour has a different theme. Apparently last year, it was a tribute to Star Trek, and the robots (and I'm assuming JBOT as well) were dressed in Trek uniforms. The crowd was given a song to sing with the band -- in Klingon. This year, the theme was more lighthearted, one to which men and women of all faiths, races and sexual orientation can relate: weddings. "I Got Married by Captured! By Robots" saw the robots dressed up in tuxes and wedding dresses, and JBOT dressed up as a Rabbi. Mazel Tov! was the word of the evening. The key event was, indeed, a wedding. JBOT, ordained by the Universal Life church, was able to perform weddings. Several couples came up for the novelty of being wed at a concert in front of a bunch of robots. JBOT made it clear that the annulment bat would be available as early as two songs after the ceremony for those who did not want to remain married. Because of the theme, C!BR performed wedding classics, and a few not-so-wedding-type songs (like Super Freak!), all of which were done in a electronic thrash type of way. The first dance, the cake, the congo line and YMCA were all parts of the evening. There was absolutely no Chicken Dance or Electric Slide, neither of which JBOT would have played even if you paid him. It was all so thoroughly entertaining, amusing, geeky and cool at the same time.
C!RB is supposed to be in Lansing tonight, at Mac's Bar, wherever the hell that place is, so if you folks in my area or in the Lansing are interested in seeing him, this will be your last chance to catch him in Michigan until next year.
My libido was under superior regulation last night. Still, I couldn't help but take notice of the occasional tasty morsel. I was completely fascinated by one guy who helped move the pool table over. He was tall, dressed in a black suit with black shirt, but no tie, reddish hair cit very short, with glasses. I mentioned my ohmygodwhydoIfindhthisguysohot question to JL, to which he replied that it was probably the suit that inspired these panty-dropping reflections. I merely agreed with him, since I sure saying he looked like Josh Homme would make me look like the biggest fangirl in four counties.
Job Satisfaction!
I'd already made the plans for Friday night when I arrived home from depositing my paycheck. I noticed that a message was awaiting me on my answering machine. Initially, I just assumed that it was JL leaving me a message before trying my cell phone. When I listened to it about an hour after I got home, I was delighted to find out it was the Dean's office at WCC. The EA informed me that she would be changing the contract to show that it covers the Master syllabus only. This most definitely makes me a happy girl. I haven't put any work into the class since getting the contract, because I wasn't sure what was going to happen. Now that this business appears to be taken care of, I can get back to it without that spectral hand of intellectual property issues around my throat.
The project at MI has been stretched to the beginning of June. They've decided to completely change how the process works for this project, so they're sending everything from the company headquarters as-is, because the reorganizing of the documents is the part of the pipeline that's seriously clogged, as far as production goes. As they have to figure out how this is going to work, we're all off Monday and Tuesday. I'm not always the best with my free time, but I plan on job hunting, working on my class, and general "make your house into a home" activities (the filing is seriously piling up!). The most important, however, is the job search. I'd like to have something, or be close to having it, by the time the project is put to rest.
I hope to also head over to Happy to be Nappy on Tuesday, as I'm way overdue to get my locs groomed. I don't think I have free days anymore. There's always something. :)
I was going to talk about political issues, but I don't feel like typing anymore. Jesus, that's lazy. Maybe I'll feel like it later today. For now, I'm off to get ready to go out, again. This time, I'm headed to downtown Ann Arbor, and the annual book festival.
shawnj,
