For today: A string of thoughts

Sep 09, 2010 10:16

The background: I am reading four different books and getting excited about the connections made between them.  These are the books:
Rapt, by Winifred Gallagher
The Art of Loving, by Erich Fromm
You Are Here, by Thich Nhat Hahn
Community, by Peter Block

Something I just learned from Rapt:  The old English word that became happiness is “hap”-meaning good luck. What a happy accident. Perhaps we’ll meet again. What a crazy random happenstance! The concept of being happy began in relation to good luck.    The book said it's better to FORGET that--presumably because it's sad to think that happiness is as uncontrollable as good luck.  But I think it's awesome! I think it's fascinating.  I fucking love language!
