A few days ago I re-discovered an old gift certificate and gift card for tower music, so I headed down to spend some money in a fashion i so RARELY do, namely purchase music/movies from a retail store, on actual CDs/DVDs. Naturally, I headed to the DVD section first, to see if I can burn up these certificates without biggering the fat wallets of the RIAA.
(off-the-topic, I say biggering because I just found an old copy of
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, which I haven't read since I was a kid.
if you aren't familiar with it, this is the part i'm talking about:
I meant no harm. I most truly did not.
But I had to grow bigger. So bigger I got.
I biggered my factory. I biggered my roads.
I biggered my wagons. I biggered the loads
of the Thneeds I shipped out. I was shipping them forth
to the South! To the East! To the West! To the North!
I went right on biggering...selling more Thneeds.
And I biggered my money, which everyone needs.
I like that word, and that passage makes me think of the RIAA. (among countless other organizations, really..)
I hit up They Might be Giants first, and found the DVD
"Direct from Brooklyn", which is rapidly becoming the best DVD in my collection. This might be old news to some people, but this DVD outstanding. It has all their music videos (including the Tiny Toons versions of Particle Man and Istanbul), plus COMMENTARY on the videos by the Johns, two audio tracks from the Japanese release of Mink Car that weren't on the American release, the Trailer for
Gigantic - A tale of two Johns (Which opens in Pasadena on July 18th, and is playing NOW at the Laemme Sunset 5 Friday and Saturday nights at midnight!), a live video of Why Does the Sun Shine, and quicktime home movies and low-fi tracks, which I'll share with you.

Hovering Sombrero (9.8mb, 52sec, Quicktime), a home movie of them playing their instruments while waiting at the airport for their baggage and stuff. i THINK you can get this from their website, but I haven't seen it for a long time.
•
Working Undercover (1.3mb, 72sec, MP3), a neat verion of the song, but only half of it.
And, one that's definitely on their website, but I'm posting anyway because it's one of my favorites,

I Am Not Your Broom (1.4mb, 36sec, Quicktime). if you haven't seen it, watch it.
You can get low res versions of their music videos from tmbg.com, but the DVD (and all the sweet chewy They-Might-Be-Giant-ey goodness contained therein) costs a measly FIFTEEN bucks. For the record, I DID end up buying two CDs with the remainder of the certificates. I bought
Hail to the Thief (Radiohead), because Radiohead won't sell on the iTunes music store, and I bought
The Pizza Tapes, by Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, and Tony Rice. I downloaded it from gnutella a while back, but I couldn't get all the tracks, and it's a stellar musical experience. Also unavailable on the iTunes music store, unfortunately.
Those were the first CDs i've bought in a long time, and will likely be the last for quite some time.
