“Hi, Mr. Roddick. This is Tony Sanich from The Purple Orchid calling. I am very sorry to inform you that due to the latest economic downturn, we won’t be able to put in your order for the bouquet of flowers for today. We sincerely apologize, especially today being Valentine’s Day and all. We’ll be happy to give you a full refund. Again, my apologies…”

“This is for a Mr. Andy Roddick. I am calling on the behalf of Cioppino’s. Due to overbooking, we are not able to hold your reservations for tonight. We genuinely apologize for our mistake and like to offer you reservations for a future date, which the expense will be covered. We hope to see you again sometime…”

“Hey, Andy. It’s James. I just heard that the chocolates I picked for you for Fish are being recalled. So don’t give it to him unless you wanna kill him. Hahaha. I’m kidding. Hope you guys have a good night. Call me back, alright?”

At the sound of the doorbell ringing, Mardy looks up at the clock, noticing that if it’s Andy, he’s an hour early. Nonetheless, he dashes down the stairs, clad in a pair of teal boxers, and trips over a haphazardly placed shoe. He catches himself before falling though, and takes a deep breath as he opens the door.

Andy has a bunch of plastic grocery bags in front of his face, lowers them as he says with an apologetic smile, “Surprise?”

Lying together on the floor of Mardy’s den, Mardy on the right with one arm curling around Andy’s back and the other holding a rapidly melting Popsicle, the soft sounds of Jack Johnson fill the night’s air. With frozen lasagna, beer and fruit Popsicles, their night is far from ideal, completely the exact opposite from what Andy had planned with what he called the “Most-Romantic-Night-Ever-In-History”. But Mardy’s happy, more than, so Andy can’t complain.
