Andy doesn’t know when it happened. He’s sitting here, in the darkness of his hotel room, watching a familiar face shine with sheer happiness as he celebrates his victory upon his screen. He can remember a time when he disliked the Spaniard, maybe he still does. Those around him, especially Roger, couldn’t understand why Andy wasn’t his warm and kind self with Rafa as he is with everyone. At a point, he didn’t like his tennis. Andy couldn’t figure out why a tennis player would want to look like a bodybuilder. Then it was his attitude, not an ounce of humility in his body. But now… Now, it’s all so different. Maybe it started with the handshake on the practice courts. Andy was caught off guard when Rafa offered out his hand and felt his fingers curl around his wrist, holding him in place for a timeless second. When their eyes met, Andy could see Rafa was offering something, something he didn’t know he wanted until that moment. Friendship. Yet it’s more than that, a kind of lust Andy didn’t know existed. Suddenly, Rafa’s shy smiles can’t be described as anything less than sincere. His struggles with the English language that were once amusing, now cause Andy to grit his teeth in attempts to refrain himself from using the word cute.
As the Spaniard hugs and consoles a heartbroken Roger on the television, all the reasons why he may not like Rafa fly out the window.
