I still feel sympathy for Stefan, but I think it does add some potential insight into Damon's motivations in the Lexi episode. Previously I'd conjectured that he subconsciously resented her place in Stefan's life which used to be his and thus the fact that their relationship was purely platonic is what actually made him resent her more. Now I think Damon also resented her because she had been a vampire they'd met who he asked to "help" Stefan (who was clearly scary and out of control), but then what happened was that Stefan turned into someone who didn't even want to be a vampire or live like one at all and rejected Damon's way of life -- which, who knows how much of who Stefan became was actually about Lexi, especially since she still drank human blood... but that's logic, and emotionally I can see Damon blaming her for it. It was only a few episodes before hand when he'd been fighting with Stefan about "remembering who you are".
He regrets what he did, like he regretted what happened with Jeremy, but perhaps they were both examples of him letting festering emotions overwhelm and control him.

It definitely made Damon killing Lexi a lot more complex than it was originally. I just don't feel any more sympathetic for Stefan than I did right after she was killed, if that makes sense. Like this episode did nothing to increase my sympathy for Stefan while it did increase my sympathy for Damon. So I kinda just wonder what the writers were actually trying to do with the flashbacks, cause I'm not sure that I had the response they were hoping for, idk.
