By the way of a few small comments, someone tonight helped me realise why it is I feel I'm growing away from the goth social scene so much

Have to agree with that, to be honest. There's often an implicit assumption that the goth scene is somehow superior to the likes of nu-metallers or spookies or whatever. I'm willing to bet, more-often-than-not based on little more than prejudice and brief glimpses at some of the more vocal members of these scenes. And even within the scene there are those who see themselves somehow above the rest of us, for whatever reason. As I spent most of my time nowadays (well, when I used to go out) in goth clubs and the like, I can't really comment on what it's like in other scenes, but I know when I used to go to more alt/metal clubs it wasn't like that.
Agree. If it every happened on the rock/metal/glam scene it's never been to such an extent as I witness it among goth groups. My visit to London reminded me of just how bad it really is. Pretentious isn't the word. It makes my blood boil. I've been a bit vocal on that front lately too much to the chagrin of some acquiantances :D Does that make me as bad ?
Agree too, and that is the reason why I much prefer alt/indie/metal clubs nowadays albeit the Southend metal nights have an all too significant amount of posers that I really don't fit in with.
Maybe its a regional thing though. Ziggys in York, for example, might not have been the greatest night in the world music wise, but there was always a good, relaxed atmosphere with no intimidating snobbery factor whatsoever (haven't been for about 18 months though so can't really comment). And that is why I prefer it to a lot of the goth nights around, apart from the fact that I don't like ebm music but that is something different completely.
can totally relate...as u know i have to put up with the same pretentious areseholes you do ... and if i ever become one of those pretensious arseholes..please kick me!
I can actually say that I agree with _everything_ you say here. I don't know if you've noticed that I've drifted from the Goth scene for more or less the same reasons. I'll still probably go to Whitby and the very occasional slimelight but that is to see my good friends who have been there for me. The pretensiousness and posers really put me off though, especially as I don't care for dressing up on such occasions and being something I'm not.
Yeah, just stick to clubs where dress is not important is my advice. I like the local indie nights round here as people are just happy to be themselves and there seems to be no discrimination or snobbishness in them either. And they play Joy Division and the Doors which make me happy :).
Not sure whether the Goth scene is more pretentious than when I got into it round about 1997 or whether it's me thats changed and realised it. Maybe a bit of both.
